Why isn't anyone doing a remake of this movie?

Don't get me wrong, I love the original. I love this movie, it's one of my faves. but it was made in 1980 omg! It deserves a bigger budget treatment and it would be such a success commercially. I don't know why it's not already being done. They just need to find the right actors with the right chemistry and that's it. The story's pretty simple and hard to ruin. I would love to see a retelling of this story set partly in the modern present and whatever past they choose. It would be heartbreakingly beautiful, just like the original ❤

I just watched it in 2015 for the first time and its a master piece , i never like to watch movies older than 1990 as i am 26 years old myself so this movie made before i born by 9 years but there are very few old movies that i had to watch like this one and other 5 movie i think (some old incredible Tom Hanks movies ,Meg Ryan movies , Back to Future , Terminator , and Walkabout 1971 which was the oldest movie i have seen )and some few others so once i watch these kind of movie i hate them in the first 15 min as they are old and the graphic is not cool but once it pass 20 min of the movie i forget anything about it and i live the movie as this kind of movie transfer you from your seat to a world they live so you lose the track of the time and i even didn't realize the movie come to an end and i thought its in the half of the movie so imagine how much great the movie was so in my opinion these kind of movie they should never made a remake for them as they are still one of the best .

I used to feel that way about some movies but now I feel like after 20 or 30 years there's no harm in updated adaptations as long as they stay true to the original vision.

What I have a problem with is remakes of amazing movies just because they were in a foreign (non-english) language or something so they remake it with English speakers or whatever when the original came out only a few years ago. The remakes usually don't measure up to the original and the vast majority of people who see it don't even seem to realize it's a remake and that's just tragic. I've come across a few films like that.

I don't particularly care to watch old films either (almost 20), but something about romance and time travel just makes me melt ❤. If you liked Somewhere in Time you might also like The Love Letter (1998) and The Time Traveler's Wife (2009). Oh and also Il Mare! I LOVE that one so much 😍

I've seen The Time Traveler's Wife (2009) its one of my favorite movie and i have seen a lot of great time travel movies which i like them a lot but didn't know about The Love Letter (1998 so i'm going to watch it this week as i found it and i liked the trailer so thanks for your suggestion :)

my other fav TT movie is The Time Machine (2002) , The Butterfly Effect (2004 and of course Interstellar (2014) .

Longest sentence ever. I never watch movies before I was born. Wow how worldly of you!!

reply

That's what I was thinking. There's nothing like admitting right out of the box that you have no world view beyond the small microcosm of time that you live in.

reply

LOL You are the same age as my oldest son and he and his friends do the same thing! They won't watch movies older than 1990! But I am doing my BEST to change that and it is working. They are loving them !
Believe me, you need to see the ones made in 1939 and the 1950's. True masterpieces!!!!! :)

Wait! Wait! Where are you going? I was gonna make Espresso!

"i never like to watch movies older than 1990 as i am 26 years old myself"

That is so, so pitiful. All those wonderful pre-1990 movies out there, and you choose to deprive yourself of the pleasure of seeing them. It's tragic. Now that you are thirty-one years old, perhaps you have grown up.

You are a very lost soul

Why aren't they doing a remake of this movie? Because they just couldn't make it heartbreakingly beautiful, just like the original

I don't think they are capable of making this kind of simple and elegant movie any more.

Everything now is geared to the poster above who wants lots of gimicky cgi graphics, and in your face stories. They can no longer do subtle and charming.

There is a certain classic beauty and refinement in Jane Seymour in this role that I think would be hard to recapture with another contemporary actress.

But, that's just me...

reply

there is something i can't describe about old movies , like the actress were so innocent and pretty in a way that i can't see in the new movies and they were able to show the love in all these old movies without nudity like the new movies so i can say the new generation lost the true meaning of the love thats why they can't show it to us they way they could before . so when you watch old movies you fall i love with most of the characters as for the new movie you just forget about them after 10 min of finishing the movie .

I stand corrected this post is the longest sentence ever. Try a period once in a while!

IMO, there is not much Hollywood can offer to improve upon the original.

Particularly the composing of the score etc is impossible to improve upon. The acting and cast and direction, cinematography was impeccable.

It would be hard to improve upon the realism of going back in time........and the charm of the scenery ......would be hard to beat.

Richard's apartment and sports car would be desirable in 2015. Elise's present day home as portrayed in the original......as-is works even in in a remake. The University, the hotel in modern day as portrayed in the movie.....had a timeless charm.

What I think would be interesting is a making of some kind of movie based on a screenplay based on the prequel book Memoirs of Elise.......and tweak it as a movie that can stand on it's own........like an awesome Twilight Zone episode form the 50/60s with

Didn't know about Memoirs of Elise. Looks interesting! 😊 Thank you!

People are often saying here the old cliché, "The novel was better." Fine, then instead of a remaking this movie, make another movie that's very faithful to Bid Time Return. There are certainly enough differences to make it interesting. Then we could really see if the book was better.

reply

It was kind of odd, but after having seen the movie a bunch of times, I finally read the book a couple of years ago, and I really didn't like it that much, especially the ending. It made me depressed for days, I won't say why, but if you read it, you probably know. I just thought the movie was better, and having been to both the Hotel Coronado and the Grand Hotel, I thought the Grand Hotel as a location seemed better to me. The book made one very aware of how brief their time was together while the movie didn't seem like that even though it was pretty much the same length of time. I dunno, maybe if I'd read the book before, I would feel differently, but I don't think so.

BTW, I had the same opinion about Poldark, also based on novels, and I thought the recent adaptation was better than the books for many reasons. Oh, and the same goes for The Count of Monte Cristo. Sometimes, movies can tell these kinds of stories better than just words, what with the music, the costumes, the locations, etc.

Because few remakes are ever as good (or better), than the originals.

It deserves a bigger budget treatment...

I can't see what a bigger budget would do for this movie. This movie was about two people being in love, and the budget this movie had worked perfectly to show that emotion.

They just need to find the right actors with the right chemistry and that's it.

I seriously doubt that could happen with today's young "so-called" stars. It is all about COMEDY with them, not DRAMA.

and it would be such a success commercially.

Keep Dreaming. Ghostbusters 2016 is proof that fans of the original won't go see the new one, and everyone else will just complain about it. No one can just watch a movie anymore without picking it apart.

It would be heartbreakingly beautiful, just like the original

We don't need a remake of this film.

If you love the original so much, JUST WATCH THE ORIGINAL!

but it was made in 1980 omg!

Oh No, NOT 1980...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Give Me A Break. You "millennials" are so full cow plop with your views on not seeing movies before you were born. ("I won't see movies before 1990!")

I've seen many wonderful movies that were made before I was born (1975), and I would never have it any other way.

If you won't see any older movies, you are just robbing yourself of quality entertainment, made by people who actually cared about the films they made, and were not just looking for a paycheck.

reply

Excellent points. Before I read your post, I had no idea young people were reluctant to watch older movies. How odd! Some of the best movies ever were made before the turn of the millennium. I have a lot of DVDs from the 80s and 90s. I still watch them once in a while. Some of them I watched over and over when they were new, including this one. I also have a few from the decades before.

You might find the story simple but you definitely need great talent for this kind of film wherein credibility is being stretched.

What Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour as well as director Jeannot Szwarc and composer John Barry did in this film was extra-ordinary that the cult audience really empathized with Richard and Elise's romance to that point that they are willing to overlook everything from how much suspension of disbelief is required to make the story look realistic.

Without these special talent,it would be easy to ruin a remake of this film. 😉

reply

I agree. Just looking around, I can't imagine anyone else playing these roles. Christopher Plummer was also perfect.

If they do it should be done entirely different so as not to try and recreate the original. With the right writing team, editor, and director it can be done.

I'd reverse the genders and have the woman be the seeker who is visited by an old man in his final days. I'd also change the setting and instead of worrying about too many modernisms not working with this type of tale you can have both coming from past eras that preceded the Internet Age. That way you can focus more on the story and the characters instead of worrying about the latest version of smartphones or digital technology being portrayed in the movie.

reply

They would destroy it that's why.
