Why was Mason starring?

I was wondering why Mason was starring at Scotty and her boyfriend while they were making out in the hallway?
Also, why didn't Mrs. Engels tell Mason the truth about his father actually being his grandfather a long time ago?

I wonder why Mason was watching the girl being raped on TV?

Of all the male actors in this movie, I think Mason is by far the most good looking of them all.

I think this film drops a lot of red herrings about Mason so that you think he's the killer. He comes off as creepy and voyeuristic, and the scene where he's watching the rape on TV is very strange and over-the-top. It must have been pay cable, because a major network probably wouldn't show that at the time (or now).

Originally Mason was supposed to be gay, according to the special features. I think they didn't know how to develop his character, which is true for most people in this film.

As always, WarpedRecord got it right, they were trying to establish Mason as the killer. Though there is one slight flaw in logic: the TV has a rabbit ear antennae and, although it's cable-ready, you can see when he moves it off of the trunk that there's no cable plugged into it.

Thanks very much, VinnieRattolle, and excellent catch on the cable-ready TV!
