If the movie was made these days...

Would a place that remote have things like cable, internet and cell phone service?

reply

Yes, and I would also believe that it would be opened up and in full operation. I can't see how a resort can afford to take an entire season off and only be available in the spring and summertime. Most, if not all, modern resorts need to generate year-round receipts.

I think it was a resort for the extremely rich - so they made their money off high prices. But then if it was open all year, there would be no movie.

During his job interview Jack asked why did they close for the winter and not take advantage of the ski season. Mr. Ullman explained, "When the place was built in 1907, there was very little interest in winter sports. And this site was chosen for its seclusion and scenic beauty. The winters can be fantastically cruel..." and he explained that the cost of keeping the road open was too much.

You are correct that it was the playground of the rich and famous, and probably extremely expensive. Wendy asked about past guests and Mr. Ullman responded:
Stuart Ullman: Four presidents, movie stars...
Wendy Torrance: Royalty?
Stuart Ullman: All the best people.

And as long as they could make a connection with a satellite they would have all the modern amenities.
