Wendy is just as much a child abuser as Jack is

When Jack broke Danny's arm Wendy had a duty to get Danny away from him and she didn't, instead she continued to subject an innocent child to his abuser. She's is criminally negligent.

I don't know of that qualifies Jack as an abuser, certainly not a chronic abuser, it was probably seen as a one time incident.

It is not shown n the movie well, but according to S King, part of the story is about Jack's struggels with alcoholism. The incident with Danny involved alcohol.

reply

Yes and if his alcoholism is hurting Danny she needs to get him out

reply

He quit drinking right after that, so it was probably understood it would no longer happen again. It should also be noted that the initial incident was by accident anyway. Jack was trying to pull Danny away from the mess but in his drunken stupor, pulled too hard. He didn't purposefully hurt him.

reply

It doesn't matter, he's still a danger to the kid. You have to put your child above your spouse.

reply

I agree but I think if they never went to the Overlook, Jack would have never been a threat again.

reply

You could be right, I don't know if CPS would see it that way though. (Although CPS may have not been as tough as they are today back in 1979-1980).

reply

Yeah, times were different in the late 70's/early 80's. Things might have played out differently now.

reply

Today, CPS isnt as eager to separate children from parents as some of you are.

If a modern parent hurt a child while hammered, and then got treatment and sobered up and stayed sober, there might still be an open file but they would neither be working to take the kid away, or telling the wife it's her duty to get a divorce. Of course, there's no way in hell a competent caseworker would okay Jack's plan to spend six months snowbound...

Also there are many interpretations for the Shining, but unlike the book I think Jack was already a little on the edge before they even went to the Overlook, also the way the film seems to pan out it seems that Jack was cursed to return to the Overlook regardless so he could provide the Indians whose land was desecrated a blood sacrifice. Now let's say something happened and he wasn't able to make it to the Overlook whether movie Jack would have still gone crazy is up in the air and your guess is as good as mine (Book Jack would not have gone crazy, I read the book back when I was 13 but from what I remember they made it clear that Jack was actually possessed by the hotel and that he wasn't the same Jack).

reply

I don't think one accidental incident qualifies someone as an abuser. He became sober after that (until his stay at the Overlook). She had reasons to give him another chance.

reply

Actually it does, and Wendy stayed with Jack because she cared about her relationship with him. She put her love life above her son who by the way doesn't have a voice in the matter. Jack broke Danny's arm, that should have been game over for Wendy but she just wasn't strong enough.
