an international audience won't get that "here's johnny" 😬 being a reference to the introduction of johnny carson on "the tonight show", i saw this movie for years before finding that out, now i find that moment in the movie very, very funny. barry nelson doesn't look to have changed since "the twilight zone" even though it's been two decades, what a great cast all around, i also recognise apollo's trainer from "rocky" in a small part, and also what great footage, right from the great beautiful opening shot mixed with haunting music. spoiler, the only thing i don't like about this is what happens to the guy who you think will rescue them in the end, he loses some coolness though by having dirty pictures on the wall, i haven't seen his fate since the first view because i always look away when it happens, i had seen this many times when suddenly a channel aired the extended version, i knew nothing about it at the time and suddenly all these new scenes popped up. - "you chopped your wife and kids into little bits, then you blew your brains out." - "that's strange, sir. i have no recollection of that at all."
