Bourbon on the rocks

Jack Daniels is bourbon? Since when?

reply

What is it?

reply

Tennessee Whiskey. Bourbon is usually only Whiskey from Kentucky. It all depends on your definition of Bourbon and how seriously you take it.

reply

Well, in the reality of the film, especially the time(Past/Present/Future etc), it works... But is is most certainly the "Jack/Daniel" that is the MOST important to take note of.

Since the Brown-Forman Corporation, of the Jack Daniel Distillery, described it's Jack Daniel's Old No.7 Tennessee Whiskey as being a 'bourbon whiskey' on their COLA submission to the TTB. Which the TTB approved.

I sound like a know-it-all ashhole, but I really just googled it. The TTB website tells you what self-descriptions each company submits alongside their own various products.

I know there's some debate over whether or not Tennessee whiskey is distinguishable from bourbon whiskey, but if Jack Daniel's own company describes it as bourbon to the TTB, isn't that akin to Thee Word of God/Film Director on the actual plot of his own movie?

The only caveat is if it's a director who tells the masses a generic plot, but reveals it's actual meaning only to a select few he respects. Because while Jack Daniel's and Co. only prints Tennessee whiskey on their bottle labels, they're in the TTB's ear, whispering, "Let's don't tell anyone this is bourbon, because they might not buy it if they find out that Tennessee whiskey is just bourbon whiskey that's made in Tennessee."

Well I found out. I still drink it, though.

Brown liquor is gold under a bright light - that's all that matters.
And that Jack And Daniel are in the name.

reply

True. But in the land of IMDb, films get taken to task on every last tiny detail.

You can try to tell the OP that it doesn't matter what the bartender calls the liquor. But there are folks running around these here boards that will discredit an entire movie for less. Because it breaks their suspension of disbelief, or whatever.

Even if it's a masterpiece like The Shining. In which case, perhaps they need a good talking to. Perhaps a bit more...

reply

Excellent write up.

In some places, if you hear "bourbon" - you think "Kentucky". Likewise, with "whiskey" and "Tennessee".

reply

Thanks. I knew bourbon was whiskey, but I didn't know about Tennessee whiskey. A shame, since I drink it. Not too perceptive. And I used to bartend. Double shame.

Apparently, Tennessee whiskey is distinct from all others because of one key difference: that its distilled in Tennessee. It's also supposed to be filtered through maple charcoal. But, if you distill an identical whiskey filtered with maple charcoal anywhere else on Earth, what you'll have produced is, legally, bourbon whiskey. Crazy. But interesting.

I wonder if there's a special Kentucky bourbon, made only in Kentucky? Must google.

All I know is, the Jack Daniel distillery better not relocate. Or we'll all be drinking boring old bourbon.

This is an interesting read, minding differences between whisky and whiskey and scotch from bourbon.

Just as "Champagne" only comes from France. Otherwise, its just sparkling wine.

reply

Not really.

You also have similar protected titles like Cava from Spain, and Prosecco from Italy.

Cava is made in the EXACT same way as Champagne. It's just that their marketing back in the day was top notch. I think champagne is overpriced, but I digress.

reply

Hahahahaha!!! No doubt. And I'd say......perhaps a bit more 😉

Thank you for the chuckle!

I knew you'd be the person that re-enforced my answer. It was months ago and I just got a reply. I was definitely being to Coy so it's my fault but other than the 1980 version, I see the Color, the Symbolical Meaning(Jacks face is Priceless) but without a doubt, the JACK/DANIEL Parable is my favorite. It plays along with the Double Theme, Abuse, Alcoholism etc amongst Father and Son. Hence the convos that Jack has with Lloyd as well.

Google the Jack Daniels FAQ and you will find it's not a bourbon. It uses the word's "Jack Daniels is not a bourbon. It's Tennessee Whiskey". But for all intents and purpose, it's bourbon but done over the border (bourbon is only bourbon if it's done in Kentucky), and it's dripped over charcoal for an extra step. Dunno where you got all that other info from.

I don't even like Whiskey....but damned if they didn't make it seem appealing.

reply

It's not. My bigger problem with it on the rocks. Neat all the way. Maybe a small splash of water for higher proof.
