What were they watching..

I just saw the extended version in the cinema and there is a scene when wendy and danny are watching TV in the hotel lounge before Danny goes upstairs to get his toy.

At the start of the scene the camera focuses on the TV they're watching and slowly moves back. Can anyone tell me what the name of the film or show they were watching was?? Much appreciated

The movie they are watching is "Summer of '42."

It's a decent movie, actually.

Brings to mind the incredible shot with the windows and doors showing outside the hotel and he and his mother in the shadows and your eyes are drawn to the TV in the middle of the room.

The number games Kubrick embedded within the film have been a source of speculation for decades. It is interesting to speculate on the "meaning" behind the usage of "Summer of '42", which relates to the earlier scene in Boulder when Danny has his first Shining blackout in the bathroom, where he is wearing a sweater with "42" on it. Two scenes after the "Summer of 42" plays (broken up by the peculiar exchange between Danny and Jack) Danny is "summoned" into Room 237 (2X3X7). The crucial "vision" that Jack has later in the same room takes place, paralleling Danny's original Boulder vision, in a bathroom. I don't know how much Kubrick was familiar with Gematria, the practice of Jewish or Gnostic mystics finding meaning in the number value of words. Maybe he just put it in there because he likes puzzles and number-games. It's always fun to speculate on these things though!

Not only that, but important events occur at significant recurring numbers (12 minutes in, 21 minutes in etc). So the theme is embeded in both the content and the form of the film.

KDK12 :
12: Overlook/present
21: Overlook/past (4/7/1921)

Room 237:
2 + 3 + 7 = 12 (Overlook)
2 * 3 * 7 = 42 (Jack's abuse/violence)

12 * 2 = 24 <=> 42 (doubling + reversal)=

12 <=> 21 * 2 = 42 (reversal + doubling)

REDRUM <=> MURDER * 2 = Grady/past + Jack/present
