Which version is the best?

I grew up with the 2 hour version, as I live in England. Considering I usually consider myself a Kubrick, and a horror fan, I was *beep* mortified to discover for the first time tonight, 19 years in to my life that the US release has an extra 24 minutes on to it! I can't believe I wasn't aware of that. Anyway, is there a preference or what? I'm a little nervous to see it, but if it is preferred, I really should.

I've only seen the longer version, imo the more Kubrick the better.

On IMDB - the shining's home page under the "Alternate Version" tab it describes all of the scenes that were left off the European version. don't know if that'll keep you from enjoying the "extended version".thanksđź‘»

Actually the two versions are mirrors of one another. They are meant to create a more whole vision of the story.

1) The European/UK version is more Jack's story.
2) The US version is more focused on Wendy and Danny.

Two sides of the story.

Kubrick played both sides against each other and the fact that up until now...each side could only see the version released in their area. Now we all can watch both.

Wow, I've seen this movie many times, and had never heard of there being more than 1 version. Not sure which is the version I've always watched, but it's always longer than two hours so I'm guessing the US one.

Need to know what's different!

Edit: *beep* autocorrect keeps changing my words into Spanish.

No it doesn't. You are just putting your own interpretation and projection onto the film and looking for things that don't exist to make it more interesting and you sound phony. The shorter version eliminated a whole lot of unnecessary narrative that made the film a failure in the first place. We don't get any less of Jack's story in the longer US version as opposed to the international version. It is THE SAME STORY, with less exposition regarding Wendy and Danny that wasn't really needed.

All it mirrors is Kubrick's ego and that he had to come to a realization that he had overindulged and had a mediocrity on his hands. He made an attempt to improve the film by picking up the pace a bit. Nothing is lost in translation between the two versions. He apparently preferred the shorter version.

Don't eat the whole ones! Those are for the guests. 🍪

I live in Australia and have also grown up with the "European" version. I first saw the film in 1995, and it wasn't until 2010 that I found out that all this time I've been watching a different version. However, after watching the "US" version I still find myself going back to the Euro one as I find it to a bit tighter around the edges so to speak.

Don't put the devil in the picture, cause' the religious groups won't wanna see it.

There's differences I liked in both versions, but overall I think I like the European version better.

For example, I don't like the skeletons and cobwebs scenes of the American version, but I do like Jack referring to his wife as "the ol' sperm bank".

The movie is perfectly fine without the extra 24 minutes. In fact, Stanley Kubrick said this is the version he prefers.

I’m a little bit torn on the issue. The shorter version does get rid of some of Wendy’s more obnoxious dialogue however it also removes other essential scenes. Example in the short version the first time we see halloran is when he is walking down the hallway with Wendy and we have no clue who he is. Also I really liked the cut between dick hanging up the phone then the 8AM title card and the next thing we see he is on the plane and that is missing in the short version.

On the flip side the short version does get rid of Danny’s doctors visit and the cut between the first time we see the blood and them driving to the hotel was very well edited.
