Can anyone explain to me what happened by the end?

So, the subtitles on the release I own suddenly stopped working so I had no idea what was going on by the end.

I thought that it was Jackie's character dressed up as Beggar So but before that scene and after he's handcuffed... so what happened?

The film has several continuity problems.

It is not explained how Dragon (Jackie) got released from its handcuffs (perhaps he followed the son of the police president and he opened them). Dragon dressed himself up as a beggar and pretended to be an old man in front of the audience so that it looks like he got beaten up by those two villains (he 'cries' alot while the fight: "Please don't hurt me", etc.). Finally he can rescue his brother Tiger.

In the scene just before this fight we learn that the man with glasses just want to get rid of Tiger as he does not want to share the loot. Thats why Tiger get trapped by his "comrades". Furthermore in the scene after the market fight Dragon makes a deal with the police president (Dragon threats him with destroying his valueable pipe): if Dragon catches Kam (the bad boss rescued by Tiger and his "comrades") Tiger will come free.

Then we see Kam beat up the man with the glasses because he got tired of him. Dragon interrupted Kam and fight him. The man with glasses supports Dragon in order to get away with the loot. Dragon got beaten up heavily and needs alot of water until Kam got the water bottle. That's why the man in glasses gives Dragon some sort of oil to drink. It is not explained why but Dragon just became insensitive to pain and Kam was nearly exhausted by beating up Dragon so long. Therefore Dragon managed to beat him.

The final scene with Dragon fully wrapped in plaster is meant as he got broken every bone by Kam.

Thanks for all the great details!

One more question, what was it that Dragon was drinking at the end of the fight? Was it alcohol (as some kind of homage to Drunken Master)?

In fact, he does not drink anything at the end of the fight.

At the end of the movie you can see him with the oil bottle - it was weapon oil.

Aside from this, after the Beggar So fight, Dragon isn't handcuffed but Tiger is... Dragon simply walks in the "handcuffed style" so Tiger won't feel left out, basically. In the rare Taiwanese cut, we find out that Dragon has tricked Tiger into handcuffs at a restaurant so he can take him to the chief to negotiate his release upon Kim's capture.

as explained in jackies biography, the ending is:
he cant beat the master with any of his techniques,so he just dumps them and tries to brawl + tire out the other master, and beating him that way.

but i gotta say that, altough its jackies style to be the underdog who gets beaten up just to rise in the end and win,its almost painful to see him getting kicked around so much .
