I would love to see this hilarious time capsule of a film on dvd with extra's like cast and crew reflections and a look at Marin County, then and now.

I too wanted to know where the DVD is.
I assume you watched on VHS?

If so, where is it available for sale?
Thanks.

reply

I'm not sure where Angelbooty saw it, but I know it's been popping up on the HBO channels recently. In fact, I think it was on HBO Comedy a couple of days ago.

reply

It's on HBO Comedy in 10 minutes for me. Havent seen it for almost 15 years. Popping a tape in since it's the best I can do until a DVD version is released. If nothing else, at least put out a $10 no extra version. I'd still buy it.

On July 1 2008, the dvd version will be released. I just pre-ordered it at Movies Unlimited. Right now it's only $12.74.

reply

Actually, it's already available exclusively through Legend Films, though you'll pay $14.95 for it. The July 1 date, which I didn't know about, may be a date when it becomes more widely available. No extras on the disc, unfortunately, but at first glance, the print seems to be a good one. I've only had time to sample it thus far.

Legend is also releasing some other odds and ends from Paramount that I've been waiting for; "The Busy Body," an all-star adaptation of the Donald E. Westlake novel, and "Money From Home," which (along with with "Three Ring Circus") was mysteriously absent from Paramount's two volumes of Martin & Lewis titles. Like "Serial," the discs contain no extras.

Now, if only Fox would put out "Fire Sale," I'd be a really happy camper.

reply

If you wait until the official release dates you should be able to save $5 or so on this and other Paramount titles now licensed for release to and by Legend.

Besides the films you mention, Legend is also issuing other older Paramount titles like MANDINGO, HOUDINI, RHUBARB, etc. The official release dates for this first batch of films vary, some June 3, others July 1, with more expected later.

when it first showed up on cable back in '81 or '82. It was one of those movies that I felt compelled to watch whenever it came on. I ate lots of popcorn and had lots of laughs watching this movie several times.

I know I haven't seen this movie since 1982 and I'd love to get the DVD.

reply

I actually saw this movie in the theater. It's great and I would buy multiple copies on DVD.

reply

I would love a DVD release. I would buy it!

reply

I saw this in the theatre long ago with some friends one of whom grew up in Marin County. The movie is so dead on. If you can get the book it came from--which was a series (hence the name) of articles/stories in the SF Chronicle--do so it is really funny. I read it in 1979, so Who know how available it is. THe sub title was something like "A year in the life of Marin County"

I'd buy the DVD in an instant.

reply

Would love to have a DVD, because the VHS version I bought used at a video store is pretty well worn.

Martin Mull and Tuesday Weld are fantastic. Sally Kellerman, Bill Macy and Peter Bonerz are hilarious.

It's terrific satire. Of course, it looks dated now, but so does the period it covers.

Studios and distribution houses often resist releasing older less-than-blockbuster movies on DVD, thinking they'll never recoup the production costs from what they think will be limited sales.

Write to the production companies listed on the film page and say what you want. Majority rules. Money talks.

I don't watch tapes anymore. Won't buy or rent them. It's either watched on digital cable, on demand, DVD or DVR'd. Tape is out. Digital is in (i.e. hard disk, DVD, CD, flash memory, etc.)

saw it originally in theater. saw a scene in another show. would prefer dvd but liked it so much broke down. a few weeks ago bought old copy on ebay. waiting to recieve it in the mail

reply

Do you know where i could get a DVD or VHS of the movie?

reply

Does anyone know where I can find a VHS of this movie?

reply

As others have stated, it can be obtained on eBay. I got a copy there too.

This is a hilarious slice of time. It is really funny to think back....because
things really *were* that weird. Not for everyone, and not all the time, but
often.

I thought that the over-medicating doctor was hilarious, but Martin Mull's
deadpan character was over the top.

I wish this was realeased on dvd as I live in England and the video won`t play on my machine.I haven`t seen it for at least 25 years and would love the chance to buy it.

I still remember the one time I saw this film, about 20 years ago. A lot of the dialogue was just hilarious. And after that, I couldn't ever find the film. I'd always look in video stores, anywhere I was, and never found it once.

A DVD would be great.

reply

Here's another person who'd buy the DVD in a minute.

Who do I write to?

reply

I would snatch it up on day 1. I was too young to experience this movie when it came out, but I discovered it in the late 80s. Wore out the first tape. Didn't have it for years. Recorded it last year off of one of the movie channels.

This company is releasing a bunch of Paramount titles including SERIAL. They begin rolling out in June, but you can get them early from the Legend Films site. People are recieving these titles and are commenting that the transfers are OAR and decent.
