is it good and scary?

It’s the most frightening film ever made.

It's alright, but not very scary.

Well, it's more of a period adventure film than horror. The horror aspects were sold BIG in the American release, which also added some improved makeup effects and the transformation sequence which was spun as "You will see a man turned inside out!" - which was nonsense. For what it is, the film is enjoyable.
