shareCan you describe the volleyball scene? I thought I had the nonedited version because there are f-bombs and nudity, but I don't remember that. I do remember Cohen flipping out on a scoreboard.
So this was a TV movie? For network TV? Or did it just air on TV with cuts because of a failed distribution deal? It seems very much like a theatrical film. I'm not normally big on war films, but this is very good.
This is a very good war film, the volleyball scene is when caputo is officer in charge of the dead, and that colonel yells at him to get in the game, it's pouring rain out and a humourous scene, it's followed by the other major requesting caputo to lay out nva bodys for the general to see, and caputo flips out.
What was the nudity scene? when they were in the saigon whore house with the Aussies, I remeber Caputo having a girl, but don't remeber nudity, actually i think she did show her small breasts..
I don't think it ever made it to theatre, but then I was to young at the time, but it has been on TV numerous times edited.
Thanks for the recollections. I watched the movie this morning, and I don't remember the volleyball scene, but I do remember Caputo flipping out. I wonder if there might be different edited versions out there? I see one of the reviewers says he's rented three difference VHS versions, all of them butchered. This really doesn't feel like a TV movie, but I guess it ran as a miniseries.
Really strong performances here by Brad Davis, Brian Dennehy, Michael O'Keefe and Stacy Keach, and it's interesting that Laurence Fishburn played a similar role in "Apocalypse Now" a year earlier.
And yes, the nudity was in the Saigon brothel, with the woman in bed with Caputo. It's pretty minor. There were also a few f-bombs, but this would probably be PG-13 today, at least in the butchered version I have.
you can get the full uncut version via a somewhat grey market chinese dvd. It has burned in Chinese subtitles but is the full version of the film and in english. You can get this quite cheaply off amazon.com and ebay
The 191 minute runtime listed on the imdb is WITH commercials

I just bought that Chinese rip off DVD it is still not the whole movie.. It did have a few extra scenes I never saw though.
-I remember History Television played it edited with a pretty decent chunk of it.
-I ordered a old VHS, with other alternate scenes.
-The Chinese DVD had some of the left overs.
...All three were not the same though.
And I feel there's still chunks of the movie I haven't scene, somebody needs to make a petition to the owners of this film to officially release it on a full 3hr disc package
thought you might like to know, that at one particular website, someone has the full 190 min print of the film. Evidently it was available on Dutch vhs in its full 190min-- I may or may not be snagging it now

Evidently the film overseas has had a few vhs releases of the full 195 min version. I then came across a US vhs (seemingly an official release of some sort) that was an ep mode of the 195min edition and bought it. So once this tape arrives will know for sure and then transfer it myself to a dual layered disc to preserve that 3hr and whatever cut of the film with nice quality to take advantage of the dual layered dvd+r

Do they have more than one copy for sale? I'd love to purchase a copy?
sharedidn't see another one of that vhs tape but i have a feeling it might show up often enough. Once I get mine will let you know exactly what tape to look for

Amazon lists a VHS release by Anchor Bay...is that the one you got, and what's the runtime for it? Thanks.

Wow. I forgot to reply to this thread for over a year now. Sorry about that
The tape was from Starmaker. Either all of their tapes are like this or I just got a bad copy but the video was crap. The quality as in the picture was fine but the tape had many problems and the type of issues tells me it was either a bad tape or it was because of their crap EP mode. Either way cheap all around. This version ran 187 mins (3 hrs and almost 8 mins), though the cover says 195 mins original unedited series
So whether this is truly uncut (they may have time compresseed it for whatever reason) or if it is missing anything I could not tell you

Thanks for the reply...I considered it a shot in the dark I'd even reach you! Many users on IMDb don't have their alerts turned on (I don't) to know when their posts are replied to.
Yeah, thos EP speed tapes can be real bitches sometimes. I've had some that never tracked at all, and then others that ran flawlessly. But it's good to hear that the (almost) full version of this mini-series is out there somewhere because since I haven't noticed this being rerun since the 80s that seems like it's about the only way to get a copy of it.
