where is the original?

It seems the DVD is 95 minutes but the original is 106 minutes (as per IMDB). I saw a VHS of this after seeing original and it is all cut up with major scenes edited out. One of the best scenes was when Meatloaf left home. His family was eating ribs looked up at him and said "BYE, BYE B.B.!!" with BBQ sauce all over their faces. It cracked me up but it was cut on the VHS version. Why did they cut this? I can understand if they had to cut a bands performance because of song copy-write problems but the whole movie seems to have been re-edited into an incomprehensible mess.

The DVD box cites a running time of 95 minutes, but it's just further proof that whoever created the cover didn't give a damn about the film. The DVD features the full, uncut, 106 minute print of the film (which is the running time cited in the 1981 edition of "Screen World," the most accurate source I've ever found for tracking down the running times of original releases of movies). The DVD is the fourth print that I've had of the movie, and they've all been identical (with the exception of a few nuances, such as the final VHS release which had the opening/closing credits in widescreen).

The scene that you're referring to with the barbecue sauce never included the line, "Bye-bye, B.B." -- Travis says that as the plane ascends above the Shiner Beer truck, I believe. It'd make no sense for Travis to have said goodbye to his family, when he left on the spur of the moment. The barbecue sauce scene (chapter 10 on the DVD) involves the family reading a postcard from Travis. I've never watched the full-screen side of the DVD, but I can't imagine that it'd feature a truncated print when the wide-screen side is uncut.
