Asleep At The Wheel scene

I love the bit at the tire manufacturer convention, where Asleep At The Wheel are performing, and Ray Benson asks, perhaps rhetorically, "Who booked this gig?!".

The scene where Roy Orbison calms down a bar brawl by singing The Eyes Of Texas Are Upon You (the Texas state song) is pretty funny too.

I read an interview with Ray Benson a couple years ago where he talked about the movie. Asleep at the Wheel were offered a role in URBAN COWBOY, but they turned it down to appear in ROADIE, figuring it was more apt to be a success. Which makes the "Who booked this gig" line more ironic...

Oh wow! I never heard that story!!! Yeah, that DOES make the line ironic!!!

BTW, someone once told me that Asleep At The Wheel, back in like 74 or 75 once opened for Kiss, of all bands! So I bet Ray's had more than his share of real life "Who booked this gig?!" moments in his life.

I was singing on the road with Asleep At The Wheel from 1970 through most of 1986, and I don't recall ever having opened up for KISS. Doesn't mean it didn't happen. Just means it doesn't stick out in my mind, which you would think it might.
