a conspiracy?

I was preparing to join Netflix because i heard that Resurrection was available there, but it doesn't show up in a search. Has Netflix already dropped this movie? Is it true that there is a conspiracy, maybe protests from viewers who have the same mindset as the villains of the film (the Sam Shepard character and his father) to suppress this film? Is that why it took so long to even get it released on DVD? Even Amazon is burning it to CD-R when ordered rather than having stock, which is weird for a major movie.

I better order the movie (though it's stupidly expensive, which is why i didn't immediately order it) before it disappears from there.

I doubt it's a conspiracy. I'd think the fundamentalists would focus on removing another Ellen Burstyn classic, The Exorcist, from their queue. That's way more blasphemous than Resurrection (especially the scene where she penetrates herself w/ a crucifix).

I bet it has to do w/ the film rights. It was on Netflix for a good year because I watched it a few times. Films are constantly expiring from Netflix only to be added a few months later when the rights are renewed.

It is weird that Amazon is the only retailer that sells it. This film is a cult classic. If the studio put together some interesting special features, the DVD would do quite well if it was distributed globally. Plus Ellen Burstyn wrote that it was her favorite in her autobio (which is a must read for anybody who thinks EB is a goddess).

They don't think it's worth burning a bunch of DVD's or even reserving the bandwidth for this classic film, because of the miniscule returns that it will get. It has a small but loyal cult following, but not much notoriety other than that.
It's a shame, and that's the way it is for countless other excellent movies that are almost forgotten by audiences today.

Maybe write Criterion Collection. If they get enough requests, it's possible they might try to make an edition on DVD for it. Buying the rights from Universal might be too much trouble, though.

Generally.. the OLD Guard of the FBI would clean out Libraries of "Some" books.

Which means.. they come in and find the books they want. Check them out. Then throw them away as they get in their car.

This type of BS was still going on in the late 80's.

For all we know.. they are throwing away MORE books today than before.

Speaking of libraries? The school where the kids of the folks who work at the "Skunk Works".. Has one of the best technical selection of books in the US. Of course next to the Stacks at the Library of Congress. (if I got that right)

I can't remember if it was a private or pubic school. Hmmmm

It's weird that any of his films, especially an acclaimed post-Taxi Driver major commercial film, would be out of print. Conspiracy!

A lot of popular movies are no longer available, or difficult to rent. I've got Starting Over and Sharky's Machine on my list, and there's a long wait. I doubt they are that popular that they are rented a lot, so I assume they have few copies available. You can't rent to buy The Turning Point (Shirley MacLaine, Anne Bancroft) and more. It's not like it's some obscure silent film or something; it was quite popular when it was released in the late 70s.

I've leaned towards believing the film was out of total circulation and unavailable for eons as the result of a possible two-pronged conspiracy between strange bedfellows indeed: one which joined the fundamentalist religiosity folks and the fundamentalist atheistic folks.

Both of whom would hate this film.
