Byzanium?

Why were Brewster and the "coloradans" mining the mineral in 1912? What value would it have had to anyone back then?

Unknown, but the movie did say the US military envisioned a use for it.

Apparently byzanium had some military possibilities so the US Army paid Brewster and his team to dig it up. It's anyone's guess to what the Army planned to use the byzanium for, but maybe they originally wanted to turn it over to the scientific community for an analysis first.

Who knows, the military has come up with some pretty bizarre ideas for weapons. Birds with bombs strapped on them to destroy Japanese houses during WWII comes to my mind.

Science flew people to the Moon, religion flew people into buildings.
