What didn't make sense to me (among other things)

There were many things with the film that didn't make sense, of course, for various reasons. However, one thing i kept thinking was why didn't one of the characters say something to the effect of "we're going to raise the Titanic to get a small load of byzanium and when we use up all of that byzanium, then what? we'll be fresh out of Titanics."

i don't know if i missed something that stated that the byzanium lasts forever and it never needs to be replenished. an inexhaustible source of energy would be a valid reason to spend an exuberant amount of money to raise the Titanic.

From what I remember, it was supposed to power a system to defend against a nuclear missile attack. Which isn't something you have to do very often.

They only needed a few ounces at a time to power the system. The Titanic supposedly had two tons of ore in it. That would have been more than enough to power it for a long time. (Although I think this explanation might actually have been in the book and not brought over to the movie but I'm not sure.)
