Surprised that he's 95 and still alive

Being a boxer would probably take some years off your life with all the blows taken. Plus he obviously wasn't in great mental shape and got fat. Does anyone know much detail of his life since when he's depicted here as washed up and overweight? Did he lose weight and turn his life around somewhat?
