Trash you old editions and get the Synapse Blu-Ray!

Having upgraded through 50 gazillion VHS and DVD editions (and I still contend the '98 Anchor Bay disc was the best until this point), I'm happy to report Synapse has issued a release that's 100% watchable. You can FINALLY see what's going on in the dimly-lit night scenes, the colors are lush and properly saturated, and the picture's about as sharp as it could ever possibly be (taking into consideration that it was filtered and shot on cheap film stock).

Others have noted the good 5.1 audio mix, which personally I wasn't impressed with (the dialogue's clear but the songs/music are sort of muted) but thankfully the original mono track is included.

I'm slightly baffled by the 10 minutes of alternate TV footage, which seems to be transferred from film in its original aspect ratio. It's doesn't look quite as good as the movie itself, but it's a tremendous upgrade from the VHS TV dubs that have been floating around (if only other studios would put this kind of effort into finding lost TV footage from old movies). Additionally, there's 25 more minutes of outtakes -- which is raw, silent negatives of various unusued/alternate shots which are accompanied by the score.

Plus there's a trailer, TV/radio spots, a new 40 minute documentary, a meandering audio commentary and a still gallery filled with both standard and rarely-seen photos (including the Japanese program). About the only thing that they didn't include is the soundtrack album (which has only been released as a bootleg).

Once again, Synapse has proven themselves as the Criterion of bad horror movies, and I wish Scream Factory (which is becoming increasingly sloppy with their releases) would follow Synapse's example.

I just got mine in the mail tonight from Amazon and am gonna kick back and watch it tonight— I'm beyond excited, both for the transfer and for the deleted footage from the television version. I paid a pretty penny for the Anchor Bay DVD on eBay back in the day because it was the only "good" print available at the time. This is in my top 5 favorite slasher films and I'm enthralled by the fact that it's finally gotten a quality release with some love and care.

Watching Synapse's transfer of "Curtains" was like watching an entirely different film, and I expect the same of this one. None of the home video transfers until now were worth a damn. I'm still holding onto my Anchor Bay DVD though, I collect out of print and rare horror titles, and I spent lots of time watching that one over the years so I can't part with it. I also have the Echo Bridge disc which I probably will get rid of— it's too bright, it's a PAL transfer, and it doesn't have the sentimental value that the AB disc does to me.

I too have the old Anchor Bay release of this one and like holding on to OOP discs such as that one.

I did get the Synapse release in the mail today. I'm looking forward to checking out this movie again.

What do you think this is, a signature? It's a way of life!

Update: Just watched the Blu-ray tonight, and it was all I could ask for and more. The documentary was really fascinating too; the only thing I felt was missing from it was Jamie Lee Curtis— an interview with her would've been nice, even with this film being a blip on the radar of her career. It was one of her most popular films in her early career aside from the obvious Halloween.

I haven't watched the outtake reels, but I'll have to get around to those. I did watch the additional footage from the television broadcast which was nice to see, though, as the editor said, it is rather dull. I think one of my favorite features though is the inclusion of the television spots and radio advertisements. They had a really genius advertising campaign for this film, and the TV spots are still effective today.

Awesome blu-ray and has great PQ/SQ restoration no doubt as it's better than those crappy Echo Bridge and Anchor Bay DVDs plus there is great extras too.

Don't trash Scream Factory, they are awesome too. And this year with Sleepaway Camp and Pumpkinhead and Slumber Party Massacre they did great PQ even on Ginger snaps, now Nightbreed and Vincent Price with Halloween collection should prove they are great.

Who is on the documentary? Just the crew, or was some of the cast back?
