Did Anyone Else Have This Problem Watching This Film?

Did anyone else have a problem watching the scenes that were shot at night,or in the dark?I mean you couldn't really see anything.I was watching this the other night on the Encore Suspense channel and I couldn't believe how dark this film was.I mean it is tough to watch some of those scenes, especially with the killer wearing black.I'm kind of hoping that with the new Blu-Ray they can fix it a little bit.Probably not,but it would help.

This film is notorious for that issue. I actually don't remember the VHS being that bad, but the DVD versions were nearly impossible to make out. I have no idea if this was how it looked upon it's release but I seriously doubt it. They'd have re-shot it and considered the footage unusable. I don't think Synapse would release their Blu-ray without fixing this issue. They put out great releases.

The funny thing was the other night this was on one of the Encore channels and I still couldn't see anything in those dark night scenes. So I hope it is fixed on the Blu-Ray.

I projected Prom Night on the big screen for Avco Embassy for a week or two circa August, 1980. And you seriously doubt correctly. It was never a great-looking picture - the cinematography was dreary, the film stock was cheap, they put vaseline-type stuff on the camera lens, and the "natural" lighting was a bad idea - but it's been presented on home video in botched telecines since 1981. And Encore is playing what appears to be an old 1981 telecine prepped for premium cable off a rotting old U-Matic tape. That's exactly what it looked like when it premiered on HBO. Unwatchable.

If you want to see what the film was meant to look like, go to the Synapse Facebook site and look at the scans. If you don't want to spend the 20 bucks on the Blu, the Echo Bridge DVDs that were ripped off a European PAL release and can be found in $5 bargain bins everywhere have many problems but the image being nearly impossible to make out is not one of them.

So is the new Blu-Ray release going to basically look the same?

Many early 80s slasher films are bathed in darkness during nighttime or suspenseful scenes for whatever reason. It's very common of the genre. Maybe they were trying to replicate the "shadowy" look of HALLOWEEN, in the process just making things unwatchable.

The blu ray really brightens up the night scenes. The detail in the darker scenes is phenomenal compared to the cruddy versions from the past. Since it was filmed with cheaper film, it looks it's best even with the few soft looking scenes. But overall an awesome transfer! The soundtrack is totally redone and is also great.

Well alright!I'll look into it then. That was always everyone's complaint about the movie.

I DVR'd it off of Encore just the other day. Watched it tonight and the quality was horrible. They must still be using what they had before.

With any luck it will have a Ultra HD Blu-ray release, Ultra BD's have something called High Dynamic Range(HDR) this could help elevate some of the darkness problems, HDR is the difference between the brightest whites and the blackest blacks. Add in the higher colour space defined by REC 2020 instead of the colour spaces defined by REC 605(SD) or REC 709(HD) at a higher bit depth of 10bits vs the 8bits Blu-ray's have and more pixels 3840 x 2160 instead of 1920 * 1080(HD) or 640 * 480(SD) Also throw in a higher frame rate of 60fps instead of 24fps and I think things could greatly improve.

Ultra HD Blu-ray's are due to launch this Christmas keep an eye out for them.

I used to have 2 DVDs of the film from Echo Bridge Entertainment. The standalone DVD of it looked just fine to me, but there was another version from the same studio that came in an 8-film set with other films like Demonic Toys, Evil Bong, Decadent Evil, etc. and it was so dark that it might as well have been a pitch black screen at some moments. You couldn't make out a thing. I was wondering why the exact same company would release a version that looked pretty good on a standalone disc and then a version that looked like garbage in a pack with others. It didn't make any sense. I also have the Synapse release and it looks wonderful.

Guess I got lucky. Got it on an Echo Bridge (2014) two-disc DVD set with nine other movies - bargain bin, $1.99 - and there was no issue with the night/darker scenes.
