In France, Pre-nups are REQUIRED

They are called matrimonial regimes, but they are the same concept. Under French law, she would HAVE to sign such an agreemnent. No choice. None. Zero. Zilch. This is one point in the movie that has always bothered me. Every women who is married and lives in france has to sign such an agreement (as do all men.) Why this became such an issue in the movie esapes me.

The whole thing could have been avoided by making the man be from a country that does NOT require prenups.

That wasn`t the point. The point was that it was in French and he knew she could not understand and forced her to sign it there and then without getting it translated or anything

It's already been posted that the reason for her concern was the doc was in French. A very tacky move on her fiances' part to have the doc printed in French.

Could be, that was never clearly stated. She did not say "I am opposed to prenups" or " I am ok with a pre-nup, but I need to hire my own French speaking lawyer to read this."

Prenup is movie speak for greedy man who doesn't really love you.

Well, what he says is 100% true for BOTH male AND female European royalty and nobility. In real life, just about ANY old money family (even American) would demand there son or daughter have a prenup if marrying a non-rich person.

Beyond that, most European nations require a civil marriage, and the church marriage is just for show. The civil marriages often require something similar though simpler than what we'd think of as a pre-nup.

The civil marriage has absolutely nothing to do with a prenup. How did you get such a stupid idea?

From things like this:

A marriage contract in France is much more complicated it seems than a U.S. one.

You talked about european marriages and now you show a site talking about french regulations.

What? What is the title of this thread? France is mentioned. In the first post.

French law requires one to choose which kind of marriage contract one will enter into.

No, it is to protect the man from a greedy woman who does not love him, cheats on him, yet gets at least half (sometimes more) of what he had BEFORE he ever even met her, and they years of payments from him after that.

reply

Oh, I agree, but that's how Hollywood treats them. Hollywood and women...
