This movie is an eye sore.

Or should I say it's a Popeye sore. Truly an ugly, ugly film to look at.

reply

It was the first movie I saw at the cinema. I haven't seen it since so I can't really comment on it's visual appeal but it held my attention for two hours which is something for a 6 year old.

I actually think the look of Sweethaven is one of the things they got about right, along with some of the casting (Shelley above all). It’s a complete folly, but a watchable one. Shame about the terrible, terrible songs.

reply

It crossed the line to being unwatchable.

reply

To each their own. i loved it.

reply

I wouldn't call it "ugly", but I will say it didn't mesh too well.

reply

Everyone has an opinion. So do I. I loved it. Growing up on Popeye cartoons in the 50s, I felt that the film captured the look and feel of a cartoon, which I believe the director was going for. Watch a few of the old Popeye cartoons, and you will see what I mean. You may not agree with it, but you will see the similarities.

reply

I thought it looked good but didn't like the movie. I love the early black and white cartoon in which Popeye is muttering clever commentary under his breath all the time. Once it turned color, it began its long bland decent. It turned boring. The only color Popeye I like is the Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves movie.

I think the movie did capture the essence of the Popeye cartoon. Sadly it was of the bland boring era of the cartoon.

reply

I didn't even know it started in black and white.

THAT WAS BEFORE THEY INVENTED COLORS.🙂

I HATED IT AS A KID...REWATCHED IT AS AN ADULT AND LIKED IT A LOT...ITS A RIDICULOUS TIME CAPSULE...MY DAUGHTER RECENTLY DISCOVERED POPEYE CARTOONS AND WAS CURIOUS TO SEE THE LIVE ACTION...SHE IS 13 AND DIDNT KNOW WHO POPEYE WAS UNTIL A COUPLE WEEKS BEFORE SEEING THE FILM...SHE LOVED IT.

reply

This and "Hook" were two films I hated as a kid. Just both hideous to look at.

reply

I REMEMBER LIKING HOOK...I OWN IT ON BLU RAY...BUT HAVE YET TO REWATCH IT...IM BLESSED/CURSED WITH LIKING SO MUCH THAT ITS HARD TO FIND THINGS I DONT ENJOY THOUGH.

reply

You should rewatch Hook. I saw it again after many, many years about 5 years ago, and the movie doesn't make sense at all.

reply

MY DAUGHTER HASNT SEEN IT YET...NOW THAT ITS IN MY HEAD I CAN ALMOST GURANTEE WE WILL WATCHING IT SOON.

reply

This movie was pure camp. It turned carton characters into live action. That's what made it so great.
