This movie was a big hit

This is a cult movie, and a pretty good one.

Like it or not, it grossed 60 million dollars (in 1980). That is a *beep* load of money for being a 1980 gross. Its budget was just 20 million dollars. So it was a big success.

I'm glad. I like this movie.

Robin Williams and Popeye fans are a legion.

Robin Williams, not Robbie Williams. I guess you don't know the difference.

It does a tremendous job of capturing the world of Thimble Theatre, that's for sure. Many of the characters in the Popeye movie didn't appear in the cartoons made in the 50s or the horrible ones from the 60s where Bluto is "Brutus."

Popeye cartoons were on every afternoon when I was a kid in the '50s; I wonder had the movie been made even 10 years earlier if it might have had an impact. By 1980 Thimble Theatre comic strips were long dead and the cartoons hadn't been on the air for over a decade (and there was no YouTube to catch them or vhs/dvd "Classic Cartoon" films/disks you could buy.

Unfortunately it was also panned pretty bad by the critics. I think they seriously missed the point.
