My worst movie of all-time

Anybody else agree this is the worst film ever created?

reply

No. Quite the contrary; excellent art direction and terrific characterizations. The story itself was fairly weak though.

reply

I agree the storyline was horrible and I personally believe Robin Williams was a terrible Popeye.

reply

Well, he wouldn't have been my first choice. I think he did an excellent character, but I didn't get a "Popeye" feel from it, so much as a sailor with family values.

The character I really liked was Ray Walston's "Poopdeck Pappy". That dude was a hoot.

reply

Exactly! No Popeye feel. I believe it was a disappointment to try and make a successful movie out of the popular tv show. Most people I know try to forget this film when they think of Popeye

reply

robin williams did a perfect job bringing popeye character to life, and no , you could not find anyone else that could have done the job any better, i dont like robin williams but the excellent quality of his acting here is obvious..

reply

First the OP says this is the worst film ever based on nothing, and now only Robin Williams could've played this part, and no one else.

Where do you people come from?

I'm on the road less traveled...

he was absolutely perfect as Popeye

~I see a little silhouette of a man, Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango.

reply

what works as a cartoon usually doesnt not work as a movie with real actors.

reply

I need a rewatch to give you an opinion. However, I doubt this is worst than Batman & Robin.

Funny you mention that. That is my second worst movie ever. Lol that one us horrible too

reply

I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid but I do remember not liking it then... at all. I might watch it again to confirm but I trust my instincts.

reply

I liked this movie a lot as a kid, especially since I loved the cartoon. And I mean the old school Popeye cartoon with the mumbling and all. When i saw it on DVD, I immediately had to buy it. Now, I hate musicals, but this is still a movie that I love to this day. It's still a fun movie. The music is great. And Robin Williams was a perfect Popeye, he even had the mumblings down. Shelley Duvall was perfect as Olive Oyl as well. So no, it's not the worst movie ever. You haven't seen very many bad movies if you think this is the worst ever.

Takin' out the trash, trailer park style!!

reply

Agreed!!!

I wanted more than life could ever grant me.

reply

I can't be remotely objective regarding "Popeye." I was eight when it was released, and at that point I loved it beyond reason. I probably watched our old VHS copy 25 times. 41-year-old me is not interested in picking a fight with 8-year-old me.

If I were to see it now for the first time, how would I feel about it? No idea. I recently read about the film's production woes in "Fiasco: A History of Hollywood's Iconic Flops" and admit to taking some pleasure in going against the grain on this one. Reality is, it really wasn't a "flop" -- it earned back its budget and then some. It's widely loathed? Fine. Like a dim-witted, mean little brother, nobody gets to pick on it except me, or there could be trouble.

Movie fans should at least give credit to Paramount for giving such an obviously commercial concept to a renegade like Robert Altman. It backfired, unfortunately, but I always grant extra credit for outside-the-box thinking (see Ang Lee and "Hulk").

reply

Not even close. Its not really good, but ive seen many, many worse.

reply

It's pretty close for me. I've been trying to watch it for about a week and I can only manage 10-minute increments before shutting it off. Good points so far: Robin Williams makes a good 'live' Popeye with just the exaggerated arms and no heavy makeup/prosthesis on his face, and Shelley Duval certainly looks the part of Olive, but she shouldn't have been allowed to do her own singing. The songs are all clunkers so far. The feature version of "Li'l Abner" really did the bringing-cartoon-to-life thing right; the songs were all toe-tappers and added so much to the characterizations. Here we have two Bluto songs in a row: "He's Large" and "I'm Mean". Oh, well then... guess that about covers it. The unimpressive songs seem to be inserted just to take up some screen time, and then when they need to fill a little MORE time they trot out the plodding dirge "Sweet Sweethaven" and chant that one again for a while. Maybe this would have been better if it wasn't a musical. (Nah... it probably still would have stunk.)

reply

I don't need to watch to realize it's trashy

reply

Someone that forms an opinion without even watching something is trashy.

reply

No. But you win the prize for being the first to create this tired and predictable thread.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.
