Bluto +/ or Brutus

I know it's just Bluto in the movie, but I remember Popeye cartoons where the name Brutus is given to a character filling an identical or similar niche as Bluto. Are they interchangible names for the same character or interchangible characters? Any Popeye episodes w/ both characters? Each is featured like the other doesn't exist.

They're the same guy, bt I believe that the names were interchanged on occasion.

Not really sure why they did that.

Basically, after many years of being called Bluto, Disney complained that "Bluto" sounded too much like "Pluto" and threatened to sue so they changed it to Brutus.

THere's an explanation here.

Here, in italy, the TV-Series presented the character with the name "Bruto" or "Bluto", unfortunately in the italian dubbed version of this movie his name was "Brutus"...

reply

Sounds like something Disney would do. They should be thankful Percival Lowel didn't sue them!

I'd heard that when the rights transfered from Fleischer Studios to Paramount, they thought that Fleischer still owned the rights to Bluto's name, so they just changed it to Brutus.

Wow! That used to bug me when I was a kid. Glad to get some answers.

reply

Ah, that's interesting. I remember as a kid always being confused whether his name was Bluto or Brutus, and I thought it was just me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this, anytime I mentioned that his name used to be Brutus, people always looked at me like I was crazy. "No, it has always been Bluto."

I can distinctly remember Popeye calling him "Brutusk"

reply

Et tu, Brutus?

"Et tu, Bluto?" would've been funnier. ;)

That makes no sense.
So you're saying Disney sued Popeye to make them change Bluto to Brutus
But then Disney made the Popeye movie!
So why is he called Bluto in their own film if they dislike it so much?!

reply

He was Bluto in the movie shorts and Brutus in the early 60's syndicated TV series.

reply

I always assumed that Brutus Bluto was his full name.

It seems the licensing mistake is correct, I don't buy that about Disney's Pluto being mistaken for him.

The belief was Bluto was copyrighted to the previous company, which it wasn't.

Brutus was the bad guy in the '60s cartoon, which I saw first, so that was who I knew, and he was Brutus in the Saturday Superstar movie, Popeye and the Man Who Hated Laughter. He was like a prelude to Homer Simpson in that one as the bad guy's sidekick.

He was also Brutus in the comic books.

It seems the Saturday morning cartoon of the late '70s and this movie is when he was changed back to Bluto.

Comic book appearances said Brutus was the Sea Hag's son.

Brutus was more a friendly rival sort, who liked to bully Popeye.

Bluto was more smitten with Olive Oyl and oblivious to Popeye.

A very recent comic book appearance seems to have both Brutus and Bluto appear and they were called twin brothers.

In the original Thimble Theatre comic strips of the '30s his name is Bluto. They changed it to Brutus with a new series of cartoon shows in the '60s. I never knew why.
