Where it failed

Robin Williams was perfect for the role. Instead of going the Flash Gordon route and making it campy and closer to a serial they tried to interpret it into the real world. It was a complete misdirected effort. The characters weren't likable and it was very dark when it should have been tongue in cheek.

100 % Correct.

I think that since it was panned by critics, who didn't get it, chased audiences away. This is a great film. Many times critics are wrong and who needs them any way? Let the audience decide.

reply

it was spot on as far as the early Fleischer Cartoons

~I see a little silhouette of a man, Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango.

My impression as well.

The film is very cartoony and campy throughout. Not intended to be overly realistic at all. Not sure what some people see what they watch this film.

reply

it was really spot on with the original Segar comic strip Thimble Theatre

The audience DID decide. They almost overwhelmingly decided it was poor.

This was a big part of it. There was just NOT ENOUGH of anything. It was like you keep waiting and waiting. Also not enough laughs. Perfect cast but wasted.

...............ZING!

"NOT ENOUGH OF ANYTHING"

I think this was the biggest problem. It needed more spinach powered action.

reply

Soooo true
I saw this when I was 11 years old and I remember sitting in the theatre thinking "what the...??!" And hoping it would soon end.
If they had made it look more like a cartoon with bright colors and more slapstick and cut down the runtime.

reply

It failed because it was too slow and the songs were rubbish.

It's that man again!!

Amazing...I still remembered this in the theaters and I was only four..lol. But, I did remember it not being as good as the cartoons. I wanted more action and couldn't really enjoy a live action as much unless it kept it interesting. Yes, as an adult I can see the detail they put into the town, the authenticity of the world and characters, etc. But since the targeted audience was the kids.... they needed to keep Popeye more active in the whole spinach bit and make the plot centered a little bit more with that. Robin Williams was more than capable of delivering in that direction as well.

Why is the movie bad?

Because it was made into a musical, and no one was looking for a musical at that time. Unfortunately Hollywood had to learn that the hard way when an equally high budget musical, Xanadu, bombed in the same year. The studio allowed Robert Altman to spend $30 million dollars USD on a film that was asking to be made in a manner that wasn’t conducive to turning a profit.

Things grew worse when Robert Altman, the director, cast non-singers like Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall in roles where they were required to sing. Although their limitations were mostly disguised by the chorus’ of their song being well-performed and their singing being brief, it’s definitely noticeable that neither one was ever going to make a living selling albums. Had Altman been able to cast singers, who also would have been able to attract viewers to the film, things might have gone a great deal better.

Finally the film was at least 30 minutes too long. The main story is told in the first ninety minutes and the rest is padding. Altman grew enamored of his own abilities, rather than looking at telling an efficient story in an efficient manner. As a result, unless you are a Robin Williams fan, you’ll quickly begin to lose interest and by the ninety minute mark, when the film should be ending, you’ll still have nearly another thirty minutes to go. Audiences in 1980 observed that and they warned others about it, which caused the film to fail financially.
