Questions about Mike

1) Did he genuinely believe that Moody and his friends were the ones being bullied and needed protection or was he a bully himself?
2) How did Moody recruit him, did he need to pay him?

reply

1) I think that Mike was just a bully himself.

2) My guess is that Moody paid him off somehow, because I think after he trashed the bike he said something about liking to earn his money.

Good points, thanks for the responses!

It's interesting that in the end both Moody and Mike constantly abuse Linderman, but no longer seem interested in attacking Clifford.

reply

I always found it interesting at the end credits that Mike is listed as one of the kids. To me, he seemed like an adult...at least 20-21 years old, and not just another kid. But apparently he was supposed to be just another teen.

reply

I know, I thought that he was an adult, well into his twenties.

Mike and Moody go for Linderman in the end because he is Clifford's strongest and weakest point. They realize that Linderman plus Clifford are too strong to take down. But Moody does know Linderman's past, so he thinks (1) he'll use a stronger guy to put him in the hospital then (2) take out the "weak" Clifford himself.

Luckily, Moody and Mike were both wrong. And it's not about physical strength or simply beating up the bully in the end, but about simply believing in yourself enough to at least try to stand up for yourself. And that's a tough thing to communicate, so kudos to this sweet, wonderful classic film.

I believe Mike was in his early 20's. I'm guessing he was a bully himself in High School. Moody probably knew him from his neighborhood a the street bully and paid him to be his bodyguard. All-in-all I think Mike's scene, although not very many, were great. Too bad he didn't have a long career in the business.

reply

He was paid. When Linderman dopesn't fight, he says to Moody that he likes to earn his money.
Yeah definately not one of the 'kids'.

reply

With the money Moody paid him, combined with the discounts he got with his AARP membership, Mike made out oh-kay.

@chet, I agree, he actually looked older than 25 to me.

@danputtlitz, true, must have missed it. This certainly raises another question mark regarding his motives.

@prfrmr, yes, they should change their data.

@Zoetrope, good point, it was certainly indicative of his character, though he stopped short of seriously hurting Linderman. There is also the possibility that Mike assumed that Linderman was indeed a psychopath and decided to intimidate him (believing that it was only through fear that he could force him to change his ways), but it's not very likely.

Mike was an adult... and a thug.
Moody and his friends were thugs too, but they were baby thugs.
All of them deserved a good kicking.
But I'm only talking about the characters - Hank Salas and Matt Dillon are both great actors to make the audience hate them so much. Matt Dillon's a pretty cool guy in real life so extra kudos to him for being able to portray such a vicious jerk so well. Don't know about Hank Salas, he might really be like Mike, but I doubt it. He's probably one of the nicest guys in the world in real life so a great actor too. Surprised he never did much more. And whatever happened to Carson? That kid was funny.

Mike was actually the father of the Lou Reed-looking guy who hung out with Moody. He used to hang out around the high school & chase tail.

reply

Mike was supposed to be Koontz's father? That's weird because he didn't look that much older than Moody's henchman (7-8 years age difference at most). Also, they didn't physically resemble each other at all and my impression was that it was Moody (not Koontz) who obtained the services of the Hank Salas character (the other bullies didn't know him from before). I guess it's possible, but it's a bit difficult to imagine.

reply

I agree with Ernest - that just doesn't seem right that Mike was that guy's dad. Where did you get that from?

reply

I made it up. Pretty good, huh?

Mike was a great realistic movie bully. Too bad he hasn't acted in nearly 30 years.

I found his SAG actor reel! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wb0Jm17ywEU

There's no way Mike thought Moody and his fellow cowards were being bullied. The guy had "thug" written all over him and he was definitely paid for his services.

You want something corny? You got it!

IMO, Mike was an older thug, maybe ten years older than the kids, but no more mature. Maybe he'd spent some time in prison and knew rapists were low-life scum in the prison culture. Moody buttered up Mike with stories of Linderman "raping old ladies" and what not, which is all Mike needed (along with some dough) to go beat up a high school kid.
