I always thought that Ricky saw Clifford as the brother he never had. In some ways, Clifford represented the younger brother he lost and Ricky wanted to redeem himself for what he had done to his brother. That was why he chose to become Clifford's bodyguard. Initially, I think he did it because he didn't much care for Moody either and saw what happened to Clifford in the locker. Also, when Clifford is yelling at Ricky with no fear and calls him a "big, dumb S.O.B.", Ricky smiles at him. I always took that as Ricky seeing his kid brother in Cliff.

Their relationship is not sexual or romantic, but platonic and brotherly. Ricky saves Clifford from being bullied, but in the end, Clifford kind of saves Ricky, too, by being the only person to get him to finally get the death of his brother off his chest.

Whether they were technically gay, or just two curious buddies who experimented on each other, is irrelevant. What they shared was a beautiful friendship, free of any labels or boundaries.
