I have no idea where you guys get this from. Two kids can't be friends without being gay?

Give me a break. Exactly how much room do you think is on the seat of that bike. He has to hold on to the guy while riding at that speed or he's gonna get thrown off

Agreed.

Same here.

yes, there was a homosexual angle in the original script (which I have read).

In the original script linderman agrees to fight moody for clifford only if clifford would allow linderman to deflower clifford. The defloration scene was filmed (set in the locker room) but that scene and the whole homosexual angle ultimately wound up on the cutting room floor. Sad!

reply

The guy asking if they are gay is probably gay himself otherwise why would he ask such a question?

reply

That's what annoys me. All over the boards, I see people asking "were they gay?" about characters, even when there was nothing to even remotely suggest it. It's really pretty pathetic at times, how desperate people get about it.

reply

Most likely the people who ask those questions are just trolling and just hoping to start something.

Either that or they're just stupid.

Nowadays, there is always at least one person on every messageboard that suggests gay overtones and what not whether it be because a guy in a movie makes one gay joke, or two guys in a movie are good friends. Especially when it's an 80's movie. Why are people so desperate to find homosexuality when it isn't there. I just don't get it. I've seen the movie recently and I saw it many times in the early 80's and that never once crossed my mind

reply

jayhn1111 speaks the truth and I support that 100%.

Either this thread was a joke - note to "you-are-screwed", it's an extremely lame attempt at humour in every way I can think of.

Or, "you-are-screwed" is a homophobe.

Anyone who seriously sees homosexual overtones in this movie has to be smoking crack.

reply

Maybe 'you-are-screwed' saw "In and Out" and assumed every Matt Dillon movie had a gay theme.

reply

It's hard to take the OP seriously with a name like that!

reply

The world has certainly changed since I saw this film when I was a student. It used to be that girls were told not to hang out with boys too much because people might think she's promiscuous. Now a guy has to be careful not to do the same thing or else everyone will think he's gay. Why can't we just watch films like this without drawing any asinine conclusions?

reply

Because these says, some people desperately search for "gay" even when there is never any hint of it. They manufacture and twist things to make it work for them in their minds.

Then they bash anyone that tells them "no" and tells them to watch movies about gay people if that is what they want to see.

reply

I just saw the movie last night. Before Clifford looked into the telescope to check out the girl undressing, I wasn't quite sure where the movie was heading in terms of, "Okay, is this going to be a 'coming out' type movie?".

Then, I has some skepticism regarding the orientation of Linderman, because he seemed like a gentle giant and maybe part of why he was a recluse of sorts was due to his need to come to terms with his sexuality. But then he TOO was shown this telescope and spent considerable time looking through it.

It was made very clear me to me, that to distinguish this movie from a movie about two gay teens realizing their sexual attraction towards each other, the telescope was used as a device to make it perfectly clear that it was just about friendship.

Even if the telescope WASN'T in the movie, they could still be costrued as straight; but there's been so many films out where two guys who become the best of friends AREN'T straight, that for the moviegoer--especially the present moviegoer--it was helpful that the telescope device was thrown in for good measure.

The thing to remember is, Linderman lost his little brother. And in a lot of ways, I could see Clifford being a good "replacement" for him because he's tinier, stubborn, wouldn't take no for an answer (like how Linderman described his sibling). I think Linderman was able to identify with Clifford because of the similarities even though that was never stated out-right. They appeared to be "more than friends" because in a lot of ways, they were like brothers--which is a different dynamic. Looking for parts to a bike together--and teaching cliff which part he needed--that's a very brotherly thing to do...

I think that if they were to make the movie today, the powers that be might have made them gay. I'm not saying that would be better or that would be an absolute--but making movies about two guys realizing they're gay is quite the rage. Also, it didn't help that Linderman looked 25 and Clifford looked 14.

Excellent post, jimbogags. I agree with everything you said.

Stupid son of a bitch, dress me up like a gorram doll!

reply

I smoke crack and I saw a lot of gay overtones in this movie...

and in 1980, it was nice to have some gay overtones as everyone was backlashing from disco which, thanks to the gays, started in their clubs in the early 70's, and much like today, they still have the coolest clubs and gay porn is the best porn in the world... even by straight porn standards, the most forbidden love is still the best, go figure...

kgs,

oy yeah!

reply

to the straight people-- please don't judge all gays by the lame posts made by some CRACKHEAD gays (usually gay men) who want to see gayness everywhere. Even regular, normal gay people find them extremely annoying. Sorry.

There are some films in the history of cinema that do have gay overtones, of course, but they are so obvious now--having been pointed out in documentaries such as The Celluloid Closet--that to try and attach that to every film is ridiculous. I guess the sad part is as one poster already put it--some gay people are desperate to find gayness in everything. Can you blame them? Heterosexuality is 99% of everything we see, hear and do. Imagine if the world were the other way around, and gay was the norm and you were straight. You'd be hoping for a little Wuthering Heights yourself.

By the way, it's a crime this soundtrack was never released!

reply

Yes there was obvious homosexual tension between the extremely effeminate Chris Makepeace and Adam Baldwin.

reply

Oh please.. this thread is absolutely moronic..
Why oh why do people want to look for homosexual hints in such a lovely film about FRIENDSHIP.. yes, FRIENDSHIP!!!
I cannot believe how low and homophobic movie watchers are..
Grow up !!

reply

You think this thread is bad, I've seen worse on other boards. I recently responded to a thread where a guy said every single friendship movie from the 80's has gay overtones. My how observant are this younger generation of movie watchers to see gay overtones when nobody else did for over 25 years. Where people get this from, I have no idea. Your guess is as good as mine as to what the connection is with gay overtones and it being the 80's. But then again, you see it on all these boards from movies and tv shows from other time periods too.

reply

Did this guy happen to mention the forbidden passion shared between Mr. Miyagi and Daniel-san? Just asking.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

god, how old are you guys?!

and movie's about guys being friends and then we find out they are gay. i must have missed something. what others are there besides brokeback. now i'm curious. but really, i do believe to men CAN (and need) have an intimate friendship with another man and it has NOTHING, NOTHING to do with sex!!!!!! now stop!

I actually went to Lake View high school (the school where the movie was filmed) and I know the guy that this movie is about. He is cool as hell and definetly not even close to being gay. This guy is the straightest guy you will ever meet and he is very smart and wealthy.

reply

@imperior213: I wasn't aware this movie was about anyone in "real life"... or maybe I haven't read the My Bodyguard FAQ or scoured the message board in full... details?

reply

i agree with ladymarylasenby that it felt more like big/little brother deal. the whole telescope scene was to point out that they were straight. the scene where Linderman taught Clifford what part he needs and then finds is more like very close friends almost brothers relationship. like another post said earlier, clifford was sort of a replacement for a little brother.

didn't anyone else notice that linderman was smiling shyly at Joan Cusack's character at the end when he gets his motorcycle back?

Are they supposed to be gay?

The only people who know are the people who wrote the story, the screenplay, the script, and the director of it. If the person who wrote the actual story was on this board, he (or she) could clear it up and say either "yes" or "no".

reply

[deleted]

Wow, the ACTUAL screenwriter eh? Awesome.

You're obviously the real deal because you use words I have never heard of - like 'dialouge'. Brilliant!

Also, I have foolishly believed that sentences should start with a capital letter (doh!) as does 'I' when used to describe yourself. As do people's names as well! Thankfully, you've made me see the error of my ways.

I also like the way you use an ampersand as well as the word 'and' in one paragraph, you rebel you!

Thanks for the writing masterclass you big Troll pudding.

Riiiight becuase your initial post wasn't a failed & lame attempt at humor either. Gotcha, champ-o-rama. Your continued attempts to be funny and cute are quite embarrasing to witness. I for one want no part in this rabid display of second hand embarrasment.

I do comprende that you have no concept of the words I type as your ineffectual nonsense and absurdly lame retorts only make you look very retarded. But hey, if it makes you feel better, champ, I like to do even the smallest part in helping the handicapped community by visiting some of these threads and talking to fine mentally challenged individuals such as yourself. You have a sunshiny day now you hear, sweetheart.
