Similar movies

Can anyone recommend movies that similar to this movie? Particularly films from this era (80's).

reply

Does it have to involve bullying? There's a lot of great movies in the 80's.

reply

No not necessarily, I just mean films with a similar "feel" (hard to explain). This movie feels real/realistic, wholesome, but not cheesy. I've seen a lot of great popular 80's films (John Hughes) also.

I like the Last American Virgin, Valley Girl, The wild life, some kind of wonderful, over the edge. Those are some of my favorites from 80's. That's just off the top of my head. There's a lot of good ones. Whether or not they're what you're looking for, I'm not sure. They're not so wholesome though.

reply

I've seen some kind of wonderful which I think is underrated, but I haven't seen the others. I look them up, I've heard of Last American Virgin. Thanks.

Drillbit Taylor was written by John Hughes...with Seth Rogen & released in the 00's. Had the same plot as this, though. It even features a cameo by Adam Baldwin.

Tex (1982)
Lucas (1986)
The Outsiders (1983)
Three O'Clock High (1987) (more of a comedy but is often compared to My Bodyguard)

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

reply

Three o'clock high isn't bad. Haven't seen that one in awhile

reply

I watched Three O'Clock High on YouTube a few months back and I could see the similarities but it was more humorous. Thanks.

reply

Three O'Clock High was more adult than this, it was a comedy, but at least they swear.. Bodyguard felt like a Disney movie

No worries, but keep in mind most those movies i sent, are very explicit, and deal with bullying, violence, and even rape.... But damn I love the 80's highschool/punk/yuppy/teens genre...
Most people have seen The breakfast club, sixteen candles, weird science etc.. But neglect the mature 80's flicks
Oh man just wait till you watch toxic avenger, and class of 84' they will open up a whole new can of worms.. They are R rated comedies.

reply

I actually just watched Class of 84 on YouTube and yeah I wasn't expecting all of that violence and stuff, but it was good.

reply

I agree with most of these 80s movies listed here. Another that comes to mind (but not a movie) is 'James at 16' TV series, if you can find that. good luck!

In terms of similarity in this vein, I can't believe nobody has mentioned The Karate Kid, which essentially lifted the entire plot from My Bodyguard, but just presented it in a more gritty, hard edged way.

But otherwise I would have mentioned some of the others too. Lucas is a great film about an ostracized kid not really facing horrible bullying, but still is an outcast. And Class of 1984 is about a bully and his goons terrorizing a high school. Kind of a low-rent action film.

"Jesus, does anyone?"

reply

I wouldn't call Class Of 84' a "low-rent action film" I'm not sure what low rent even means.. It is very graphic, and also has some underlying comedy to it, but I feel it's way more dramatic and deals with more adult themes than My Bodyguard.. My Bodyguard felt more "Disney-ish" to me.

reply

Low rent in terms of production values. Almost looked like it was shot in the '60s with how poor the film stock was. Then again, I haven't seen it re-mastered on dvd or anything.

Karate kid came to my mind, but I felt like the original poster as well as everybody else has probably already seen the movie or is at least familiar with it.

No one mentioned First Born

reply

Sorry, I just noticed that there are many movies titled First Born. IMDB has the one that I was referring to listed as Firstborn (1984) with Terri Gaar.
