I saw the remake, which I thought was surprisingly better than I expected. So, I'm curious to hear everyone's opinions from those who have seen both.. Was the original better than the remake, vice versa, or about the same?

The original obviously has a low budget, tongue-in-cheek quality that cannot be duplicated and I think it was wise that the remake went in a new directon. Both films were very entertaining and quite intense.

I thought the remake was a huge disappointment and a lost opportunity. They changed the plot and characters so drastically that it's a stretch to even connect the films at all. They're completely different in content, structure, tone, etc. They took a cult classic and stripped it of everything that gave it character, and the result is a modern home invasion thriller that's as boring and generic as it is insulting. Total waste.

shareThe original was far better. The sons were definitely more evil, and the mother, was far more convincing and totally crazy and more sinister in the long run. Acting may have been better in the remake, but the original is a real cult classic. The sons also had better deaths than the remake.
shareI consider them separate animals that share a title only. Each has things that I like about them if there is no comparison. The original is far more brutal and in your face, whereas the remake has better acting and much higher production values.

I just bought the original on DVD. It's a cool little film. I felt like the remake was more viscious though.
I read a blurb online about how Bousman was going to make a film based on the Wichita massacre. If you aren't familiar with it the real crime is brutal. Based on a home invasion, rape, and brutal murders of three young people leaving a sole survivor after being shot and run over. The two brothers responsible are in Jail. They also murdered another woman and robbed a guy before the home invasion.
I am convinced he spliced it with bits and pieces of "Mother's Day" and voila.
