1st, Why did they own the motel? Only two people ever stayed there. The story's all about the farm and the motel plays a very small role.
2nd, Why did Ida randomly try to drown Terry when they were on the lake?
and 3rd, Why did Terry stay with Vince and Ida after her boyfriend died?
1) i think the motel was a front, usually i think they had to no vacancy sign switched on. also it would probably be a good way to get some meat fast if the farmer didnt have time to drive them off of the road. (ie the swingers)
2) ida was jealous of terry, vincent said he was going to teach her to smoke meat and she wanted to keep it just between herself and her brother so she tried to drown her.
3) she mentioned that she didnt have anywhere else to go that her boyfriend was her whole world, i think it was like a place to stay until she got her world straightened out they were acting very nice and supportive of her. however the whole marrying farmer vincent was the part where i was like, oh, okay this girl is just nuts, whatevs.
Falling in love with Vincent so soon after losing her boyfriend may have been a PTSD reaction, or a simplified Stockholm Syndrome without the kidnapping/hostageing.

3. She seemed to take a liking to them, despite the unsettling vibe around them and the motel. I have to assume she was some kind of runaway who had no family or no one else close to her who she could call. Anyone in that situation would want to do that first.
