Mick -

Don't get the American VHS -- the North American edition is considerably shorter than the European, and the differences are significant and disturbing! I found this out in Japan, where I bumped into a Japanese VHS, which, to my puzzlement, had a 20 minute longer runtime; there were extra bits of interaction between Keitel and Stanton, a scene with Bernard Wicki as Katherine's institutionalized father, and an entire thematically-relevant complication involving Katherine's illness that is eliminated from the North American release of the film, which, since it impacts the film considerably and radically changes the meaning of the ending, I won't mention further. If I ever get around to getting my tape of it transferred to DVD-R, I'll keep you in mind -- I'm hoping it is legitimately released in a restored version before then, since I love this film...

I know this thread is really old, but I wanted to ask you if you could give me some details as to the missing 20 minutes. I own this on NTSC video and it definitely felt like something was missing/not explained properly. To be honest, it wasnt THAT great of a film to warrant me hunting down the Euro version and then worrying about it playing on my DVD player, but it was good enough that Im curious about it after reading your post.

My grasp of the French language is not strong, but this DVD appears to have a French audio track. If that is correct, it means that it was dubbed from English to French (and without English subtitles.)

Here is a link to a seller on ebay who has some copies.

You will need a multi-region, multi-format DVD player to play this if you are not in Europe.

I have no desire to breach copyright here but can't get a copy either English speaking or with subtitles.

Can anyone advise what is available?

If you need to PM me - doug.coull(at)gmail.com

Thanks in advance.

This ran again last Saturday on one of The Movie Channel channels, so I turned over just to show my wife what she'd been missing. Lo and behold, I landed smack dab in the previously edited portion, which - of course - was new to me. Must have caught 15 of the 20 minutes, including the part where Katherine runs off to Tasmania ( I believe ) and winds up in the shelter. The point at which Harvey Keitel comes in and finds her is where the edited version picks up. Turns out he learned where she was and went looking for her.

Now, why the North American release chose to excise this 20 minute bleeding chunk - it is all in one place, after all - is anyone's guess. However, this means the full version is now out there, so keep your eyes peeled.

It must have been a hell of a big cut to move Tasmania to Scotland.
