I thought it was going to be more violent

I seriously thought it was going to be really horrible and explicit, with the main character being so despicable, you're waiting for him to be killed. But it wasn't as violent as I thought, it was actually quite mild compared to other films like Scarface, Goodfellas and Casino. The main character seemed like a reasonable bloke, who, while doing his job as a gangster, did no harm to anyone. He let other people torture associates, he slapped a women to calm her down when she gets hysterical, he smashed a bottle over an informant's head and wanted to hit him again and he accidently killed him by using the smashed bottle. For some of them, he feels remorse. After all, like he said himself, he wants to be considered a businessman.

I'm not really on board with the justifications you're making here for his actions. Is it really better to have someone else do your torturing for you? Is it really okay to slap a woman because she's "hysterical"? Is it really understandable to "accidentally [kill]" someone because you're really, really mad at him? His character is dynamic in that he wants to be a businessman, but when it comes down to it, he deals with issues violently and rashly, like a gangster.
