Could this ever be released on Blu-Ray?

The negative is supposedly destroyed, but is all hope lost for the possibility that someone made copies? It's a damn fine film, but the quality of the DVD is lousy. They can't have been so stupid that they killed a 250000 dollar budget investment. Imagine an HD print of this...
