awfully miscast!

Loni anderson makes a terrible Jayne mansfield, she's ugly, false and basically nothing like the real gorgeous jayne. The only thing that can save this movie is Arnie's hilariously bad ending monologue!

Why would it save the film if it is a bad ending monologue?

I think the poster is implying that it's 'so bad it's good'. The words are something the real Mickey Hargitay would say but hearing it from Arnold who is trying to be serious is quite interesting.

The movie is what it is...a 1980 Made for TV movie that probably had a budget of less than 2 million. Loni is pretty good but she only captures one of Jayne's many personas. They also don't show her as being as innovative as she was...she was pretty much like a Madonna of the late 50s and 60s. Still, all in all, not bad. Maybe one day a new movie will be made that examines her 1960s life much more than this one did.

I remember the hoopla about this movie at the time. Loni Anderson was at the top of her own blonde bombshell image, coming off her WRKP in Cincinnati successful series. I remember Loni going on many TV appearances and one in particular, in the Merv Griffin show, dressed up in full Jayne Mansfield regalia. The audiences gasped. She looked incredibly gorgeous with the long platinum hair, the white dress, furs and diamonds.

Loni was the perfect choice to play Jayne, who else could have played Jayne at the time. They did have a lot in common as far as looks-wise it was concerned. Since there weren't that many musclemen actors around the producers had to settle for Arnold, whose accent is so heavy at times that one cannot understand what he says. This is unfortunate as her narrates most of the movie.

While Loni was good in it, the fault lies within the weak script, time compressions and doesn't really captures all of Mansfield's triumphs. Much more is focused on her down spiral fall from the top than anything else. It seems as if the producers were more interested in the negative than the positive.

Also, her 1960s Mansfield life and looks were mostly ignored. She didn't look as awful and heavy as Loni looked then. In fact the 1960's was when the real Jayne Mansfield emerged from the molded persona from the 1950's into her own image.

Despite all the faults this movie has, it still and entertaining film. It has it's moments.

Interesting. Thanks for that info.

My response 9 years later....I remember that Merv Griffin episode. Sissy Spacek was on that too and was given an award for her part in "Coal Miner's Daughter". I belive Loni receive an award too.

Valerie Perrine (Miss Teschmacher from Superman) lobbyed hard for this role and lost it to Loni. I think Loni looked more like Jayne, but Valerie was the better actress and probably could have channelled Jayne more did Loni did. Everything Loni has done since, all of her TV movies, she has acted like this. Even on her new show 'So Notorious', I still see her playing Jayne.
