I know that career professional Richard Donner isn't often cited as an auteur, but his direction contributed to this film, balancing sensitively outlined main characters with some genuinely humorous moments and a genuinely affectionate message by the time the credits roll.

What I'm saying is that Richard Donner knows how to make a Movie with a Capital M.

This film is pretty high on my "most underrated movies of all time" list. It's a fine film. And it shows how great John Savage was when he was given a substantial leading part.
