So if Varelli wrote the book then...

,,,why do they keep him alive? Aren't they pissed that people keep reading this book and finding out about them? You would think they would kill him off for writing it. Instead one of them poses as his nurse. Makes no sense.

An ( albeit lurid ) explanation would be that serving Mater Tenebrarum would be a fate worse than death. He obviously shows dislike for being there but he is forced too. He tries warning Mark but in the end is forced to attempt to kill him.

Perhaps, but that doesn't seem to be their style. They kill people off and feed them to the cats simply for snooping around and not really finding anything out.

I think, being an alchemist, he may have helped them magically, though its never explained how.
Yeah, the whole story is a mess IMO.

As I recall the frontispiece of the book states that it was compiled by letters written by Varelli after his death. So, he never actually intended for a book to be written or published.

Huh? He is clearly alive in the movie and the book exists as well. How can this be?

Varelli is believed to be dead and the man in the wheelchair reveals himself to be Varelli at the end. Nobody knows who he actually is except Mater Tenebrarum.

There's nothing funnier than people struggling to make sense out of an Argento plot.
