I think that I was 8 when I saw this movie and I could have sworn that Peter Gallagher would have been a HUGE superstar, but heck, at least he is still acting....

He is a big enough star. Very respected Broadway actor. See what happened is that he decided to divide his time between Broadway/the stage and Hollywood. IMO he really enjoys singing more then acting. Also I don't think he was comfortable playing the sex symbol I believe Hollywood had him slated to be.
shareI completely agree. I caught this on cable tv when cable was first becoming avaialble where I lived, and the movie channels were sparse and the movies even less so. I loved this film, was surprised it was not better received (There are so many people who never heard of this one), and thought that Peter Gallagher would be big from here on out.

When I initially watched the idolmaker back in the 80s I totally thought Peter was going to be a massive superstar. So shocked that he's basically known as the OC Dad. However, Ray Sharkey used this movie to springboard his career to great heights. Unfortunately, he ruined himself with the sex & drugs . . . he was superb. Guess mentally, he couldn't handle the fame that came so quickly.

I surprised to see him in this and in his musical talent. I always assume actors/actresses are little more than above average attractive people who learned how to recite memorized lines with feigned emotions. But Peter Gallagher clearly has many talents and history has shown that he doesn't use his musical gifts to secure other roles. He just develops whatever skills he needs for whatever role he plays. A very rare actor to be sure!

hey dude, i would agree with you that most (not all, but definitely most) actors/actresses are nothing more than above average attractive people who learned how to recite memorized lines with feigned emotions. some are definitely better than others (a precious few) that truly have talent that is more than just a pretty face, but i think that most are just pretty faces.
shareI met Peter yesterday at a Farmers market here in LA. He was a really nice guy and not pretentious or anything. He posed for a photo with me. He commented on the great music I had playing in my catering booth! I also thought he would be a bigger star but he is a guy people will recognize but not know their name! Another actor similar to Peter who was good-looking but didn't become a superstar is Farley Granger(look him up on here).
