DVD for The Human Factor

Does anyone know when The Human Factor will be released on DVD? I believe that Warner holds the rights (since it's a pre-1982 MGM movie), but I haven't found the time to ask them.

reply

I just saw it available on DVD in Spain (www.dvdgo.com).

I think Preminger's estate owns the rights to this film. It's been released in Australia as a part of an Otto Preminger box set, but it's a pan and scan version of mediocre quality. I would love to see Warner release it (they do the best home video releases, IMO) But I don't think that'll happen any time soon.

I got it from a seller on the Amazon France site and, as maddocks4 says, it is pan and scan of mediocre quality, as though copied from VHS. Audio is English but French sub-titles are burned in. Comes in quite an attractive fold-out box inside a sleeve that belies the quality of the transfer. Hilariously, the cast listed on the box includes Raf Vallone, who is indeed in The Human Factor but not this version. He's in the similarly titled 1975 movie directed by Edward Dmytryk that starred George Kennedy but whose story bears no relation to Greene's novel.

I see these postings are quite old now but I have just watched this film on TV. When I checked online for the DVD, it was virtually impossible to get hold of. In fact there was one on Amazon but it was about £35.00 but unavailable. When I saw how expensive it was, I taped it from TV so I could watch it again. The acting was superb but I didn't fully understand the ending. Did any of you?

reply

I taped it off telly the other night too. Absolutely brilliant. Think I understood everything - what bit were you confused about?

Hello there

It was just that I was expecting a more definite ending. To me it sort of ended up in the air? Someone previous said he thought it was the correct or appropriate ending but I was hoping to see him reunited with his wife and child.

reply

He's a baddie though - that's how I looked at it. He doesn't deserve to be reunited with his wife, because he's been a double agent, and poor old Derek Jacobi has ended up dead. Great stuff.

reply

Ah, come onnnnn, he loves her and she loves him? LOL LOL

It is out on DVD via the Warner Archive Collection.

And I just watched it on the Warner Archive Instant streaming service. But I know they rotate titles in and out of availability.
