The End

I was absolutely puzzled by the end of this movie. What am I supposed to think? They will never see each other? That the grand-mother will never let the mother carry Sam with her to Moscow? Or is it a free en? You may think whatever you want?

Any idea?

I just watched it a couple of days ago. I think that the ending is meant to be very bleak. Perhaps that somewhat explains the films' brutal box office. I actually liked it, and thought that Iman was great.

I've just watched this on TV with my husband and we both are also unsure about the ending!! I presume that he will have to keep trying to get his wife and child to Moscow, somehow.
Did you know, out of interest, I checked online the DVD availability and one was over £35.00!!! So I did tape it so I could watch it again. We both enjoyed the film and the acting was superb but it's the ending that lets the film down.

I liked the ending. A happy ending just wouldn't have fitted in with the rest of the film. If they ever got together in the future then it would have been with difficulty and it would have taken a long time. That's called real life. This wasn't a James Bond film.

So presumably then, they never met up again? Probably left for the imagination of the viewers?

The book leaves it ambiguous as to whether they will meet but it suggests that they will not.

I enjoyed this movie. The ending is appropriate. His future is bleak. Iman told him his loyalty was to his family, not her people. She was right, he got used. He admitted in the cab ride that in his heart he was not a communist but now he was stuck in Moscow. Great irony of how his idealism was misplaced.

I liked the ending, it was realistic in my view
