Casting a remake

This is one of my wife and I's favorite films. The other day my wife brought up the idea of who would play the different characters if it was remade today.

She thought Harrison Ford would make a good Kendig (Matthau).

Here is what I wrote to her:

Sean Connery, Robert Redford, James Cromwell, or F. Murray Abraham for Matthau. Matthew McConaughey, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg or Brad Pitt for Cutter. Patricia Clarkson, Sela Ward, Debra Winger, Mary McDonnell, Anne Parillaud, Helen Mirren, Carol Cleveland, Allison Janey, or Stockard Channing for Gelenda Jackson. Bob Hoskins, Brian Cox, Chris Cooper, or James Cromwell (if not Kendig) for Meyerson. Daniel Davis, Jean Reno, or Jeremy Irons for Yaskov.

What do you think?

reply

Glenn Close for Glenda Jackson's character. Not sure why, she just seems right.

For Kendig, perhaps Richard Dreyfus? He's good at portraying both clever and comedic parts, right?

reply

I hadn't thought of her. You are right. I think she would be great. However, after seeing Calendar Girls, I think Helen Mirren more than ever for that part.

Richard Dreyfus! I wish I had thought of him. That's a great idea!

reply

HOW ABOUT ROBERT REDFORD AS KENDIG. JACK NICHOLSON AS MYERSON. AND MERYL STREEP AS ISOBEL WITH BRAD PITT AS CUTTER ??

reply

That's good. I like it.

My only problem is that with the Robert Redford/Brad Pitt combination this comes off as almost a sequel to Spy Games. (Even though I, originally, suggested both of those guys for those roles.)

reply

With all do respect, the Matthau/Jackson combination felt like a follow-up to House Calls. Mind you, that movie kicks ass too!

Ick, Brad pitt is nothing but a pretty boy who canNOT act his way out of a wet paper bag. IMO, they should NOT do a remake of "Hopscotch", as how can you improve on Matthau and Jackson? Answer: You CAN'T.

Here's some casting thoughts, with an eye to this project as a light comedy:

KENDIG: Robert DeNiro, Pierce Brosnan, Kevin Klein
ISOBEL: Rene Russo, Sigourney Weaver
CUTTER: John Cusack
MYERSON: Robbie Coltrane, Nathan Lane, William Macy, Jason Alexander
YASKOV: Alan Arkin, Jean Reno, Robbie Coltrane
ROSS: Ed Norton

reply

i love john cusak as cutter!

reply

Why? It's perfect.

reply

why would this need to be remade?

reply

How about setting up the remake as a forward to Cutter's character played by Sam Watterson? We see a similiar new bureaucrat like a Brad Pitt or other pretty boy actor who doesn't know head from his backside.

That would be an inside joke right off the bat which will let the plot and it's characters be true satire like the original film and take an old school character out smarting the tracking devices and high technology of the new school. And the plot wouldn't be about the Cold War but of Oil politics in the Middle East. Helen Mirren would be perfect for a Is character.

reply

Hopscotch needs to be remade with Steve Martin and Whoopie Goldberg. Once that happens you will never see the non-tard version again.

I was thinking a remake was a bad idea... until I came up with the idea of casting Hugh Laurie as the lead!! Or possibly Tony Shalhoub!!

reply

How about Johnny Knoxville as Kendig, Aretha Franklin in the Glenda Jackson role, Dakota Fanning as Myerson, and Pat Morita as Cutter? Not bad, huh?

reply

I think the remake should be made 20 years from now and star Matt Damon and Julia Stiles.

reply

LOL, a Bourne reunion. Sounds great.

reply

personally, I think remmaking this movie would be a crime, because it is perfect as is. I especially think the soundtrack should not be touched.

that said, if I had a gun to my head, here are my choices:

Kendig: Ah, if only James Garner were 20 years younger. Harrison Ford was a good idea. I think Sean Connery has too much of a forceful personality for the role, which borders on passive-aggressive. Same problem for De Niro. Redford seems too much like Captain America. I like the idea of Richard Dreyfus, and the suggestion of F. Murray Abraham has merit. Morgan Freeman would be able to pull it off pretty well, methinks. I like Liam Neeson also, if he could do an American accent properly. Bill Murray should be in the conversation as well, as should Frank Langella. I like Tom Wilkinson, and even Martin Sheen. At the risk of going on too long, Hector Elizondo. My first choice, though: Jeff Bridges.

No one can equal Mathou, though.

Isobel: I like the idea of Glenn Close, but I'd prefer Julie Andrews, even if she is getting up in years. Throw Joanna Gleason into the mix as well, and Angelica Houston, though the latter wouldn't be that good. They're all good actresses that can play intelligent, strong women. Still, Julie Andrews may be the only actress alive that has the regality necessary for the role. Alison Janney would be acceptable as well.

Cutter: maybe Ed Norton. Don Cheadle could be great for the role. I like John Cusack, but he's not young-looking enough anymore.

Myerson: Bradley Whitford. Top choice by far. If I have to choose a second, though, Paul Giamatti.

Yaskov: Gary Oldman, or maybe Philip Seymour Hoffman. They are two of the best actors alive, and could play almost any role they are physically right for. Also, if he weren't too old, Maxamilliam Schell. (wrong country, I know, but he's a great actor)

Side note: in a few years, Tom Hanks and his wife would be able to do the two leads, with Colin Hanks as Cutter. A pipe dream, though, and it might be too silly with them. Hanks would have to underplay the role, which isn't his usual style. Also, the recent pairing of Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson wouldn't be the worst, though we'd have to wait about 10 years for that one too.

This is one of the few films that I would love to see remade. The original is one of my all time favorite comedies, but there are a few folks who could do it justice.

Kendig - Whoopi Goldberg would be brilliant as Kendig (who says the character has to be male?), Paul Michael Glaser, Richard Dean Anderson, Robert deNiro, Avery Brooks

Isobel (or whatever male character) - Mel Gibson, Avery Brooks, Sigourney Weaver

Myerson - Amanda Tapping, Christopher Meloni, Paul Michael Glaser, Avery Brooks, Morgan Freeman, Sigourney Weaver...pretty much any good dramatic actor with a good sense of comedy. Robin Williams would also be good in this role, if you could keep him on track.

Cutter - Amanda Tapping, Simon Baker, Mariska Hargitay, Chris Meloni

I would love to see this movie remade and I could see Harrison Ford as Kendig and I like Rene Russo for Isobel. John Cusack would be pretty good as Cutter. What about Philip Seymour Hoffman as Myerson. I like him in every movie.

No Brad Pitt, that would ruin it.
