When I was nine years old...

...I asked my mom if she would take me to see this movie. She said that if there was any cursing in it, we couldn't see any more PG movies. I agreed to that condition, and we saw it at the Miner's Theater. It had abundant cursing in it, as did most PG movies of the era (nothing horrific, but its share of "TV words," plus the occasional "ass" or "S.O.B.", etc).

I don't recall the movie being particularly exceptional, especially when I saw it on cable a few years later. Still, my most vivid memory of it comes a few months later, when the first preview for "The Empire Strikes Back" debuted ("Darth Vader"...is BACK! Han Solo...is BACK!"). I ran into the kitchen and talked a mile a minute: "MomIknowyousaidnomorePGmoviesbutIjustsawthepreviewforthenewStarWarsmovieanditsratedPGandcanwepleasegoseeitanywaypleasepleasepleeeeEEEEase???"

She smiled and nodded her head. Of course we could. Turns out she was a big fan of the original anyway (and a movie buff in general), which I came to learn throughout my teen years). I jumped for joy, ignoring the smirks and giggles of my sister and her boyfriend, who had been talking with Mom in the kitchen.

Thanks for indulging me by reading my rather boring slice of Americana.

That's funny, I remember my friends mom taking us to see Dressed To Kill, and she said that if there was any nudity that we would leave. Of course one of the first scenes was close ups of Angie Dickenson (I later found out it was her body double) taking a shower, lol. We actually stayed and watched the whole thing, but I don't think she took us to anymore movies.

Did your mom like it when you and she were watching the scene in Dressed to Kill with the murder-by-razor?

reply

It wasn't my mom, it was my friends mom, I think she was pretty embarrassed though. Honestly, I don't remember much about the movie except the nude scene.

I was about 7 or 8 when Saturday Night Fever came out and my babysitter took me and my brother to see it.

I sat in the very front row with my brother, our baby sitter and her friends a few rows back. (I think she was meeting her boyfriend, I can't remember)

Anyway, there was a scene where John Travolta is in a topless bar and my brother actually covered my eyes every time the topless dancer was flashed on screen.

i can't count the number of embarrassing times during an 7 rated movie of the 70's or early 80's when i was a kid, sitting there with my parents and the sheer discomfort i felt as a sex scene started, in that predictable way of the era.

Wasn't the very first line in the movie "I'm knocked up!"?
That probably didn't get things off to a good start for you :P

reply

I don't think it was.

I just finished watching the movie. Yes, the first line is basically "I'm knocked up," using that language. It turns out Ritter and his companion are rehearsing lines while waiting for a crossing signal.

When I was eight, my mom got a kick out of forcing me to watch Poltergeist. I'm 15 now and have seen a ton of movies and shows that are 100x worse, but when you're eight, Poltergeist is a scary-ass movie. I had serious insomnia for over a month.
