Sunken Bug

Did they ever fish the Herbie out of the ocean from the "walk the plank" scene? If they didn't, it seems like a waste of a prop car to me. Anybody know it's fate?

reply

Well, there's two issues there.

1. If the car had an actual engine and possible fluids and such that could leak, then they'd be required by law to remove it. If not, they might have left it.

2. Props and sets have little value after the production is complete. The movie's budget is spent, and no attempt is made to recover costs through sales, though reuse is common for costumes and some large sets. But many elements are rough simulations at best, so there's little reason to keep them.

A Herbie prop (from a spin off movie like this, in particular) would have little to no value today, so it would be far from a "waste" to leave it there.

The car is still at the bottom of the pacfic somewhere. I just read they did find it and its sitting there rotting...so sad:(

Well actually that particularly car was simply a shell. There was no engine, only a frame and an electric motor to keep the wheels going in the back. Basically the amount of the car that went overboard was only about $1,000 back then so it was a relatively cheap scene to do.

I don't speak whatever.

Interresting. Funny to imagine theres a Herbie standing on the ocean floor in the pacific.
