John Hurts Character

When Waterson announces there gonna kill 125 civilians, William is speechless and you can see he's horrified. My question is if he was so upset by this move, why didnt he leave and join with the Immigrants. Why would he stay with the rich ranchers if he knew what they were doing was wrong?

John Hurt's character lacked the courage to oppose the other ranchers. He didn't want to jeopardize his wealth and social status. He was a self-loathing coward who tried to avoid fighting for either side in the conflict and ended up dying anyway.
