Did the main character NEED to be married, or what?!

The way she thinks and goes about the idea of marriage in this movie is so strange, as if she's going to flunk a class if she doesn't choose a husband by a certain deadline. You'd think she was a foreigner trying to get her green card before being deported.

Even with a wedding 2 weeks away, she only slightly brushes off the advances of an ex, does not seem remotely in love with either man, yet openly considers which one to marry! What the..? And her friends, too! They're all like "Marry Martin, I like him"--why does she have to get married at ALL right then? It's like they lived in some alternate universe where one must be married by a certain age or something terrible happens to them.

So strange how they all look at marriage in this movie.

It's the plot of the movie. That's really all it is. The killer's main targets are soon to be married women. Anything else in the script probably came after.

Many young women from that era thought that way about marriage. I remember being in high school in the late 70's early 80's and most of the girls wanted to get engaged and married by the time that they were twenty-one years old. It was like a competition among the other girls to get married around the same age.
