Full Title...according to Tom Hanks

I distinctly remember Tom Hanks on Letterman YEARS ago talking about his experience with this movie, how they shot the Coney Island scenes on the Tilt-a-Whirl in the dead of winter, and that the full title was "He Knows You're Alone So Don't Go in the House Cuz He's Gonna Kill You With a Knife." I thought that was hilarious, wanted to share.

That's cool that Hanks even brought it up. I figure he would still have a steller career without this movie, but I wonder how much longer it would have taken before he was noticed?

Actually, this charming little slasher film had little to do with Tom Hanks's ultimate success. Instead, credit Ron Howard, who recognized a good thing and went with it. According to the Wikipedia article on "Tom Hanks":

"Bosom Buddies and a guest appearance on a 1982 episode of Happy Days ("A Case of Revenge," where he played a disgruntled former classmate of The Fonz) prompted director Ron Howard to contact Hanks. Howard was working on Splash (1984), a romantic comedy fantasy about a mermaid who falls in love with a human. At first, Howard considered Hanks for the role of the main character's wisecracking brother, a role that eventually went to John Candy. Instead, Hanks got the lead role and a career boost from Splash, which went on to become a box office hit, grossing more than US$69 million." (Downloaded 7.16.2011. They filled in the blank with a point of clarification....

He mentioned it today on Kelly & Michael. They asked him trivia about his own life and asked him his favorite Hanks movie. It was his first film and he got $800.

reply

Yeah, I think he was probably joking about that being the original title. ;)

Did he actually say Coney Island? That scene was shot at the old Sand Lane Amusement Park on Staten Island.

Interesting.

I think he was kidding. 
