Whoa mate!!! We are just quoting from a UK TV show which you really need to watch. Most of us, probably, haven't even seen the film. The line was said to annoy another character in the show. If you can't get hold of the series try to get Shaun of the Dead it is by the same people and freaking hilarious.

I will leave to to unknot your panties

Take it easy buddy

I'm another one who's here purely 'cos the film's about to come on bbc one. It's mentioned in spaced? Don't remember where... although I'm thinking, maybe in an argument with Bilbo in the comics shop?

reply

Yup, it's in the second episode of the second series, when Bilbo sacks Tim for refusing to sell the Jar Jar toy to a small child...

BILBO: "...I let my principles get in the way sometimes. I punched a bloke in the face once for saying "Hawk the Slayer" was rubbish"

TIM: "Good for you".

BILBO: "The point was I was defending the Fantasy genre with terminal intensity, when what i should have said was..'Dad, you're right, but let's give "Krull" a try... and we'll discuss it later"

reply

I just flicked over in time to see this start. I was so horrified I had to find out more about it.

This is a bad, bad film :P

I'm going to watch it anyway.

reply

I bloody love this film! So bad its good then straight back to bad then ultimately superb. This is the best thing ive seen in weeks and I watch ALOT of films.

reply

True enough - most comedies don't make me laugh so hard.

That flashback scene... What were they thinking??

reply

I just love the swarm of fireballs - actually ping-pong balls covered in reflective tape! I remember a long article on this in Starburst when it was first released. It was supposed to be the first of a series if I recall correctly, but they didn't have the money to shoot any more. Pity really.

reply

My favourite bit has to be when Hawk and his mates are tied up in the church, and guarded by about 10 people- 9 of whom have fallen asleep, and the last of which gets covered in silly string. Classic.

reply

ive just been watching 'hawk the slayer' after i was flicking through the channels and for some reason decided to watch it. as a film it is the most hideous thing i have ever seen but is great entertainment, UH OH its just finished and i saw what looked to be an eagle drawn onto the screen and was flying right for me (the realism was immense) but my personal favourite part was the elfs bow and arrow skills and the erm superb editing skills, some would say superb but only if those people were unfortunately challenged visionaly or infact blind. neway its finished and i may watch it again sometime xxxxxxxxx

reply

Ahh! My childhood relived! Hawk The Slayer was hilarious! when I first watched it all those years ago, I beleived you could get a repeating crossbow that fired bolts out that fast..Hey...I was really young! :p

They were going to make a sequel as the ending was wide open for one.

I'm pleased I have videoed this now!

reply

to rip off 1984, "being a minority of one doesn't make you insane " !!

Besides, you are not alone, saw this when I was about 12 and thought it was cool, thought about it on and off through my role playing/gaming youth, tracked it down at a cult/ SCI FI VIDEO (yes, video) shop recently (I'm now 30), took it to work and ran off a copy, watched it and still enjoyed it.

Showed my mates and they think it is cool too. Crow is a way cool elf, as cool as Legolas, the pin up boy of the elves at the moment, the auto cross bow? How does it work ? well she is a pretty powerful witch, perhaps she "majicked' it !!

The mind sword is plenty magical for me. Besides, I think its powers and Hawk's destiny were only hinted at.

I could go on... but what I really want to know is was there a sequel ?, the ending is WAY open for one..they must have planned / wanted one !!

[deleted]

no, there was none, but I've also known people who swear up and down they saw a sequel, but when pressed for details I found them recalling moments from Krull, Beastmaster, Dragonslayer, Conquest and even Yor: Hunter from the Future, so I'm guessing it's just the late night HBO binges and the confusion of youth.

I remembered seeing a Star Wars commercial where a tiger attacked a stormtrooper. For years I swore it must have been a deleted scene, but at no point did I question my own memory. Years later, I watched Krull, and saw the white Slayers and the tiger and realized I had simply confused the Krull trailer for Star Wars.

reply

Hey! I like this movie too. So you are not alone!!!! I agree that it is a cxlassic, but we may be in the minority on that score!!!!

Was I the only one that thought that crow (the elf) was actually a robot? Either that or he was dubbed by Stephen Hawking. What other than a robot could fire out all those arrows in such a short space of time? And not only that, it appears to be the exact same motion each time.. as if it was a programmed motion!

Also, "crow", with "ro" in the middle. Standing for "robot". I think Im right.

That silly string was a classic. What really made me laugh though was the lame LOTR references, like 'the Iron Hills' and 'Gimli's gorge' ( or something ), as well as 'Drogo' ( Frodo's father! ).

What local park was this filmed in?!

Bollox I missed it!!! Arse Arse Arse, ok then I know where I can buy it for £3 who thinks I should buy it??

I fell asleep during it:(

Did anyone else fully appreciate the soundtrack? I thought it was extremely Bill Bailey-esqe!

reply

Damn, I wanted to watch this when it was on the other day, purely for the Spaced reference. I missed it. Is Krull better?

I was very happy when those lines came up during that episode of Spaced as it showed that I was not the only one who had been weened on those films and others like them. I hadn't seen Krull or Hawk the Slayer for years, and was very excited to find them on DVD.

I used to watch these films all the time, and thought of them (particuarly Krull) as among my favourites, always asking for them to be rented for me. I watched them again and again, never tiring of what happened.

So why is it only now that I realise they really are rubbish (particularly Hawk the Slayer)? I thought young children were supposed to have short attention spans. I could barely sit through these films now I'm in my 20s. What's happening to me?

Another shameless reference to other, better films was when Jack Palance threw the weapon down on the floor and demanded that it be picked up by his opponent, so that he could kill him. A very similar move was performed by jack Palance in Shane.

Shane is better than Hawk the Slayer.

I was actually able to catch Hawk the Slayer broadcast on American TV back in the mid-80's and instantly fell in love with it.

You'll only have to imagine how hard I laughed when I saw the reference in Spaced. I was crying from laughing so hard!

Then to find it on DVD?!? My order is already in!

Do yourself a favor and watched Spaced, both seasons available on DVD Region 2. Now if only they would play on TV over here in the States. God, I wish I lived in the UK...

reply

now to go and see if there is a ref to spaced in the babylon5 forum- and flame it....

Insert flame here. I know you want to. I can see it in your eyes :(

reply

I love Hawk the Slayer. We taped it off cable when I was about 6 and I used to watch it all the time. Then a few years ago my brother stumbled across a copy at the video store. He asked the clerk when it had last been rented, and it hadn't even been touched for three years. So my brother bought it for me for Christmas. As far as quality filmmaking goes, it ranks slightly higher than an Ed Wood movie (the Silly String, glow-in-the-dark ping-pong balls, choppy editing, etc.) So many other great things about it though.

reply

Black Park next to Pinewood Studios.

reply

I had the pleasure of seeing this gem on tv a few years before it was mentioned in spaced. So seeing tim and bilbo discussing it in series two made it even more hilarious, cos i knew exactly what polished turd they were talking about!

A truly truly magial and awful film with the best music ever!

They must have known surely!

'What a prick'

reply

I bought Hawkey when I was in London with a friend about fifteen years ago. I was browsing the video shop looking for fantasy films and found this one. I was slightly hesitant - the cover did look damn silly - but my friend said "Buy it. It can't be too bad"

My how wrong he was...

Still, the film was amusing enough to quickly achieve cult status for us. It's been a while since I saw it now, though.

Time for revival!!

reply

I cant believe that no one has picked up on the classic " Leave this circle of light and I may be powerless to protect you ! " yeah from the goddamn glove puppets that haunted the Forest of Weir. Watch out theres glove puppet there...... damn pesky critters.

I first saw this film many years ago and it hasn't improved with age, though it does have a certain hypnotic effect that keeps you sitting in your seat to the end. After I watch this film I always want to watch Conan the Barbarian just to remind myself that before LOTR there was at least 1 decent fantasy film out there.

Does Tony Blair suck ? yes but only when George W Bush tells him too

Hawk the slayer is a classic, classic what is harder to decide . But i loved it loads when i was young and pissed my self laughing when i saw it a couple of years ago, some bits good though as well as the daft over the top parts.

Quality!

I saw this film once on tv maybe around 1983 and I liked it, but have not seen it since. It goes for over $20 new so I not sure if I will get it or not. I have a spot for early to mid-80's fantasy/ sword and scorcery films and I own several of them. Maybe one day I will add this to my collection.

reply

h) correction- the burning arrows aren't being fired AT him, but are aimed up in the air in the hope that one will land on the raft and set it alight!

reply

I loved this movie long before Spaced.

It's the greatest fantasy film (and may even be the greatest film) ever made. LOTR really is dull, and personally, I would cross the road to save a Krullite (fan of Krull). Only Conan comes anywhere near Hawk.

Another thing to watch out for, is before Hawk goes to visit his father by the sacred pool of Turkish Delight, Voltan goes through the door and a bit drops off. Though the witch hitting scene is my favourite, espcially as Hawk puts his hand on the witches head as if to say 'Oh my god, are you alright, or have I just hacked into your head with my sword!?' And still they left it in. Anyway there IS loads more to see in the film, but the secrets of the universe don't unfold to a man who never looks for himself.

Look for the horrified nun's expression when they lift up Ranulf's clothes. That's no hand, sister.

It's available in the UK on a budget DVD, which you can get for £5 or less. get some beers, and some mates, and have a watch.

I'm still hoping one day, Hawk will return... but he has largely adventured in daytime TV movies and series such as Lost and 24 since then.

I couldn't believe it when they mentioned this film on Spaced and then following it up with Krull was gravy. I saw this years ago and thought that my cousin and I were the only people in the world who had seen it.

Krull we saw together in the theatre - in my opinion it is the secret epicenter of the acting world - you can connect any actor to any other via Krull - take a look at the cast and see what I mean.

This film you could connect to City Slickers, Batman and Chato's Land via Jack P., but that's about it.

I suppose that I am here because of Spaced (and old times sake).

*WHACK*

classic.

love the jump cutted machine gun archery...thought the ping pong balls looked cool. this is a real christmassy movie, youd have to have a really black heart to write it off. besides, when a movie's called "hawk the slayer", you know what to expect...

the listing in the tv guide made laugh;

"hawk the slayer. 80s fantasy adventure starring jack palance. shoddy."
lmao

reply

Lumme - I saw this at the cinema when I was 16, at it was on TV just a few days ago. I like Hawk's incredible sword of winding - the edge is so blunt all you can do is concuss someone with it.

Not exac'ly wot you'd call 'Vorpal', is it?

Here because of Spaced as well. haha glad I'm not alone.
