Also watching it on Beeb 2. Other than the retelling of the Rasputin story (mentioned elsewhere) it seems fairly typical of a certain mode of horror film of its time.

reply

really? it lost me about the part where the woman got her boobs out.

Yeah watched it but was a bit confused.

There was a bit where the nanny accused him of rape, but we never got any closure on that sub-plot.

(spoilers)

Also it was a bit of a surprise when he got killed by something so ordinary as a gun, when he is supposed to be a part-supernatural being. However it was enjoyable fluff, and the editing for the magi tricks was really well done.

I had no idea Robert Powell was so good looking when he was younger.

The whole rape thing was sort of lost on me too.

Did she come on to him and turn jealous after being turned down ?

I am not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

reply

Yeah they didn't provide an answer for the 'rape' did they.

I think what they were insinuating was that her was such a hypnotic and charismatic character that she kind of felt she was attracted to him against her own will, as if he were some irresistible force.

For the backstory - of how such a mind-blowingly bizarre film as HARLEQUIN came to be made - don't miss the documentary NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD: THE WILD, UNTOLD STORY OF OZPLOITATION!, which was shown at London Film Festival this week and, according to director Mark Hartley, should be released on DVD in the UK next Spring (there may also be a theatrical relase before then).

It's a breathtaking, frequently hilarious tale of how an oddball assortment of mavericks - HARLEQUIN producer Anthony Ginnane foremost among them - managed to revive the moribund Australian film industry, moving from rolicking 'ocker' soft-core sex comedies to outrageously violent horror and action pics, and built a thriving, anarchic industry.

From single-minded Ozzie auteurs who could never rest until they'd exploited every last opportunity to get an extra flash of flesh into their films to bruised and battered stuntmen who'd seemingly never heard of 'health and safety' to method-acting Dennis Hopper taking his role as MAD DOG MORGAN a bit too much to heart... this is movie making at its most dementedly down(under) and dirty.

Mind-blowing though HARLEQUIN undoubtedly is, it's almost mundane compared with the glorious tales of the people who created these wonderfully warped movies.
