Yes. I remember seeing it in my local small town theater when it first came out.
Although I remember asking, "why did the astronauts head just come off?", it was kind of shockingly gruesome at the time - if not kind of hokey. You could tell they just stuck the scene in there because all the corny sci fi movies of the time
had to live up to the Alien legacy and throw in a "shock in space" scene - as in Saturn 9, and Outland.
The movie made sure the now set free helmet with a head inside orbited around several times just right so you couldn't miss the bottom part with the red gore. Kind of gross for back then. I loved the interior of the alien space ship though, with it's cool black design! That image has stayed with me for over twenty years. For ages I couldn't even remember the name of the movie. Now I know, AND finally it's on DVD too - in the dollar bin no less. ;)
They had to make him "obviously dead," or they would have to try to go and get him which was out of the budget.
shareEnough of an explosion to behead the astronaut, yet no damage was done at all to the shuttle. Hmmmmm.
shareAnd how on earth did he get into his space suit in just a minute? It takes longer than 1 minute to get into the space suit and get out to the docking bay. That was crazy fast. Plus nobody helped him get into the suit.
shareThe image of the dead astronaut's body floating in space next to the severed head really freaked me out the first time I saw this film in a theater at the tender age of eight.
I've been chasing grace/ But grace ain't easy to find
